How hard is it to fix the PTO?

I have a 5 star and the PTO shaft continually runs. I have had the top cover off and I've been told that disc's could be warped. I could not tell though. Should it be easy to see? It looks like there is enough play so it should shut off.

How hard is it to take it apart? I would guess it would be easy to tell if the disc's were warped once they have been removed. Can we still purchase new disc's.

I would really appreciate your comments as I'm not a real good mechanic and don't want to goof anything up.

Thanks Dave

Dave,
If there is clearance in the clutch pack the clutches (they are loose & can be easily moved back & forth) the disks are probably not warped. It is normal for the PTO shaft to run when nothing is attached, especially when it is cold. You should be able to turn the shaft by hand when the tractor is not running but it will be hard to turn when the oil is cold. When connected to a piece of PTO driven equipment such as a hay baler, the PTO will usually not run, but it may on items sch as a brush hog that turns easily. The 5 Star has no PTO brake to stop the shaft from turning. The first M-M that size to have a brake was later 670's as even the first ones of those had no brake. If you decide that the clutches are in fact warped, You must remove the hydraulic pump, remove the setscrew from the PTO clutch hub, straighten the lock washer that holds the nut on the main PTO shaft from turning, remove the nut from the threads (toward the front of the tractor). Next move the inside clutch hub toward the front of the tractor far enough to remove the key fron the main PTO shaft. Then pull the main PTO shaft out the back of the tractor through the hydraulic pump hole. You can either use a puller attached to the back end of the main PTO shaft or bump it rearward using the slot for the setscrew, a drift and a hammer. You must force the rear bearing assembly from the rearend case. Be sure to note the position of the parts for reassembly.
Hope this helps
John
