I read one time about a very big MM or Twin City tractor and I beleive the model was a 39/57. Did they build such a tractor? what was the biggest of these tractors did the get bigger than the 27/44 Twin City or the GB G GTA GT Molines?

The kerosene burning Minneapolis 39-57 was produced by the Minneapolis Threshing Machine Company(MTM) from 1928 to 1929. This tractor was produced before the Minneapolis Moline Power Implement Company was formed April 18,1929. My serial number list suggests that at least 1131 were built but its not known if that is a complete listing - there may have been more. This was not the largest tractor MTM produced. A model 40-80 was produced from 1912-1920 with a 1486ci flat head 4 cyl (7-1/4x9) kerosene engine. The engine was changed to an overhead valve design in 1919 and was renumbered the 35-70 from 1920-1929. It weighed 21,000 lbs and looked a lot like a steam engine with its chain steering.

These were definitely larger tractors than the TC 27/44 or G series. Minneapolis Steel and Machinery Company made much larger Twin City tractors before their merger with MTM. The TC 60-110 from 1913-1915 (rerated the TC 60-90 from 1916-1921) had a 6 cyl 7-1/4x9 bore and stroke engine and weighed 27,700lbs.

Hope this helps.

Brian

R Wyler; Yes there was a model 39-57 built by the Minneapolis-Moline Company. It was a big standard tread tractor, of which not too many were built. It had a engine built by Stearns, with a bore and stroke of 5 and 1/2 by 6 and 1/2 inch. The only one that I have seen was at Oscars Dreamland in Billings, Mt. This collection has since been sold. This tractor was tested at Nebraska under test number 163.
