Will advancing cam one tooth help a 283&403 for pulling? Is there a good reason why or not to do this?

I've heard of advancing the cam one tooth on the 283A-4 engine. I do not know if this works. I am contimplating trying this on my 1947 U with the KEF engine. I hope someone with some experience with this posts an answer here.

Please explain benefits of this to me. Seems like if cam is not reground or altered wouldn't help. On my tractors I can move the distributor enough to kill it advanced or retarded. Are you after valve in relationship to ingnition. Also what does it do to engine temp. If anybody has found an advantage for this please respond. I have a 47 with complete rebuilt engine. We will plow with it for short periods(3-4 hours) and possibly disc about the same. Son wants to pull in antique class also. Strictly stock not putting money in it to be competative.

There was a message thread about this on the MM website, i think a few weeks ago-before it crashed. I understand from them-never did it myself-that advancing the cam 1 tooth opens and closes the valves quicker in relation to crankshaft and probably does improve hp. at higher RPM. I would go there and ask the question all over again. find out who has done it and what happened.

I'll just place the same post here that I did on my discussion board. Tony's board would also be a good place to ask your question. Get as much information as you can from as many places as you can and then figure out what you want to do.

I'm no expert on camming and am trying like you to learn a little. What very little I've found out shows Advancing the cam should rock the torque curve back reducing the topend horse power but give you more bottom end torque. Retarding the cam should do the oppsite reduce the bottom end torque and increase the upperend horse power. If I remember right the peek torque for the 283's and 403's is around 900 to 1000 RPM's but the torque curve is very flat. Where we are govenored at 1430 RPM's stock we may not be running fast enough that advancing would hurt our uperend horse power and it may help it. But I'd question if retarding the cam wouldn't really be a big mistake if we aren't turning lots of RPM's. I'm not sure if advancing the cam one tooth isn't to much, you may need to make an offset key. I tried advancing the cam on one of my U's and didn't think that really helped but that U is in terrable shape. I did think it helped my Z when I advanced it.

I'm really wondering which way I need to go with the 800's cam. It's peek is 1100 I think and I can run 2262RPM's.

What I've been told on advancing or retarding the cam's the single most important thing you are doing is changing when the intake valve closes.

Hopefully someone with a little more knowlage will come along and help us both out.
