Purchased and overhauled an MM BF in a high school Vo-Ag class. After reassembly we are having a difficult time getting the BF to start. Here is what I know is correct. Timing is correct. New and correctly gaped points and plugs. New coil. New and correctly installed wiring harness. Positive ground 6-volt system. Starter appears to be functioning properly.

Symptoms. Turns over hard and battery cables get hot. Pulls battery down hard. Has spark but appears weak. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Does it start easily when you pull it? Has it been run very long, as to break it in? The weak spark could be because the starter is sucking all the juice from the battery when you hit the switch. You can run a wire from the starter side of the solenoid battery cable & route it to the coil to give it a little boost when you hit the switch.

I have had 2 BF'S and they both started hard. I put in a 8 volt battery and this helped a lot. Also make sure you have heavy duty battery cables like you would use on a diesel tractor as using a lighter cable would make them get hot.

Did you grind the crank or put new bearings in? Sounds like they could be alittle tight. It happened to me once, and had the crank polished good and it solved the problem. Just an idea. Good luck

What gauge wires did you install for the starter? You need really heavy wire like from welding cables along with clean bright and tight contacts for the older 6 volt connections to work and conduct properly.
