I use an 8 volt on a U. Works fine for me. Worked well with resistor light switch and now a voltage regulator. Just had to calibrate the regulator for the increased voltage.

Does the generator keep an eight volt fully charged?

I use 8 volt batteries,no problems.**
A 6 volt system will charge at 8 volts anyways. (Just like a 12V is charged at 14V.)

** I CAREFULLY make my own 8 volt batteries by
cutting two dead or damaged cells off the end of
a junk or damaged 12 volt battery.

Used 8V for twenty years in 2 cyls with high comp pistons. When you turn on the lights it helps to idle down the tractor before you throw on the switch so you do not blow the lights. Never experienced any point problems.
