How run LP tractor without LP gas at house? (M5 sale)

I have an opportunity to buy an M5 that runs on LP with a loader for $3700. It comes with a 6' bushhog too. Loader probably has screens/filters that need to be cleaned or replaced. My question is this, how would a fella go about filling a tractor like that when I'm on city gas? I won't be using it enough to justify renting a tank like we have down at the ranch.

How have you you all solved this?

Thanks,

Steve

If you are not showing this MM you could add a tank like they use on tow moters.Check with your local welding supply co.

Filling a tractor with 20# cylinders used to be just expensive now it is immposible.

It was expensive because when you have those little cylinders filled you pay between $1.50 to $3.00 a gallon for the fuel. What makes it worse is LP doesn't have the energy per gallon that gas or diesal has.

It is now IMMPOSIBLE due to the new valve that has been mandated by some of our illustrious bueracrats in the government. This new valve will not allow liquid to be drawn from the cylinder. Gas dealers won't fill the small tanks without the new valve either. If you are going to be working this tractor at all drawing vapor off of these tanks won't work.

As to your original question If you have a LP dealer close (within a tractor drive) and you are good at planning ahead you can drive the tractor to the fuel dealer and have them fill strait from the truck.

Another option is to buy what is refered to as a pig tank (usually 125 gallons water capacity) and a fill hose. Make sure the tank has a way of drawing liquid fuel. I would recomend a tank with a dip tube instead of a fitting in the bottom of the tank. Some real nasty stuff hangs out in the bottom of a LP tank and you don't want it in your tractors fuel system. This method uses fuel pressure to fill the tank by venting the vapor off the tractor tank. I wouldn't recommend this in a residential area.

Otherwise a LP pump of some sort is required. I think these start at about$300 or $400.

One word of caution I have found LP tractors to be addictive I added one to my collection about 13 years ago and now have 6.

Hope this helps
JT

I'm not a Lp guy. But I talked to a MM fellow at a show who said he was refilling his tank from those little tanks that go on barbecue grills. What do you guys think of that? Was he shooting the breeze? He said he could do a show on 2 of those tanks full.

Oh yeah, a 5 gal bottle will run one a long time if you aren't pulling with it. I keep a 15 gal portable handy if I run out, I have a 100 gal permanent bottle at the barn and my house has a 500 gal LP tank for heat and water heater. As owner of 3 LP tractors, I can tell you, you have to have the equipment to fuel them but when you are set up, LP beats gasoline all to pieces. I wouldn't trade LP for gas at all. I saw a UTS LP recently that had been converted to gasoline, they were using the LP tank as the gas tank, had taken the pop off out and made a filler there. I only shook my head and thought "who would ruin a good tractor like that?"

As for answering the guys question, you can find 15 gal portable bottles pretty cheap. This will allow you to put approx 1/2 tank into your M5. Next you will need a hose, fittings and a valve for the tractor end of the hose. All together for tank, hose, valves and fittings approx $150 and can all be bought at a Propane dealer. Just tell them what it is for and they should be able to get you going. Good luck.

I have a 250 gallon tank with a tractor filler hose on a trailer that goes where the tractor goes. My 2 cents!

Well, that's not really a problem here where I live, rural area, gravel roads and 60 miles to the nearest 4 lane highway. Sorry, maybe my solution is not the answer to your problem.
