BF bearing noise and lift problem

Am looking at a BF Avery that is intact and running, want to buy it but the lift will not hold position, either it goes all the way up or the implement rests on the ground. It won't stay where you leav it when the handle is returned to the middle detent on the lift box. The down force works also. The other problem is a bearing noise that occurs when the PTO is engaged and spins in neutral. Thsi noise also occurs when the clutch is engaged ingear to drive the tractor. Feels like it is in the transmission. Grease level is OK, but the transmission has been into at least once (evidence of Form-A-Gasket use), Any ideas what I am looking at to fix these items, parts availability, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

some ideas: The hydraulic cylinder: is it a MM cast iron cylinder? If its not, it needs check valves added in the circuit from the control valve to the cylinder so it will hold.
The bearing noise: check universals in the driveline for wear and shake the front shaft on the transmission to see if that's where your noise is. Never been in a MM BF transmission, don't know what you'll run into. You might want to call Bill Williams in Baldwyn Mississippi. He knows a lot about those small MM's.
