Is the belt drive for an MM power steering unit on a "U" powered from the fan belt hub? If I put an MM power steering pump on my stock 'U' will I need that special hub that takes a smaller belt in addition to the large fan belt? My present hub offers only one belt shiv for the fan belt going to the crank pulley.

Dave

My UTS Special has power steering with no separate belt. I was told all Specials have power steering. Parts lady at Stuttgart said " What's special about it- cause it's your's?"

What year is your "U"? What's throwing me is that I have never seen a plain "U" with power steering and have never seen anything in parts books about power steering.

The UB Special, which I think was offered in 1956 only, is the only U series tractor to have factory power steering as far as I know.

Kelvin: It's a 1949 UTU. I was at a sale several months ago and there was a 1953 UTU that sold, original owner, and it had a MM power steering unit on it. I believe it was a char-lynn motor with a MM Pump mounted above the fan blade. Dave

Dave,I bought a 49 UTU that has the Char-Lynn power steering that you are talking about. It has a pump mounted on brackets that bolt to water pump housing and it is driven off of a pulley installed on the water pump fan.It has 2 hoses that that run to the inline torque generator mounted on a bracket on the bolts that hold the crankcase to transmission. This is a very complete kit and includes pump, all brackets, hoses, fan belt, fan pulley,U joints, coupler and torque generator. It looks like a factory power steering as it is engineered to fit without changing anything.I took it off as I am restoring to original. It would be for sale.It does work exellant. The one on the UB is just about identical kit but there is one bracket different that hold the torque generator, otherwise they are the same.
