G900 Question

Hi folks! This is my first post here, and I need help with a problem with an LPG G900. It belonged to my father-in-law, and always ran well, but was very hard to start. I've used it occassionally since he died, but finally took time to put in points, condenser, rotor and plugs, thinking maybe it would start easier. I set points and plugs (plugs at .016; points at .021) according to the book. The old plugs were set much wider than the specs call for. When I got it started, it ran poorly. Adjusting the timing helped, but it still would not idle, and missed at low rpm's. After running for about 10 minutes, the coil died. I replaced the coil, and the same thing happened to the replacement. This tractor has a 12 volt system with an alternator. It has a diode in line. It also has a ceramic resistor. Any ideas as to what is wrong? Thanks for any input.

Change the plug gap to .030 and try it again also check for a short to ground in the distribitor

Thanks kjm, I'll try it tomorrow. I suspected the narrow plug gap as the culprit, since that was the only big change from the original setup, but I've never learned enough about the electrical side of engines to understand them. Maybe someday!

As far as the coil I would eleminate the resistor and go to a 12 volt coil. Check to make sure your leads are correct on the coil. Recheck or replace condensor as to much voltage can play havoc. Also check points as may have burnt them also. As far as hard starting I always started my LPs on vapor. Don't know if have been but it will start better in cooler weather for sure.

Thanks for the input. The leads on the coil are correct. I checked that first. I do start on vapor, then switch after warmup. Summer and winter startup usually require using my charger to assist initial startup each time the engine had time to cool to ambient temperature. None of the other Molines ever give me that kind of trouble, but they can't do what it can once it does fire off. If I do change to a12 volt coil, does the diode still remain in line?

If it is a diode I would leave it in there. Sounds like either a draggy starter or incorrect battery amperage. It should whip over good to make it start easier. Put a meter on your starter line to see what your starter draw is. Also check starter bushings in case need lubed.

The starter seems okay. It spins the engine since I changed the timing. It labored to turn it before. I will check it tomorrow. Thanks for the assistance.
