Just found a rusty (but all there) MM, Model EE, Serial # 304030. What is it?

The EE engine came in the R series tractors. The serial number you listed does not match the serial number ranges for EE engines though. The tractor serial number is located on a seperate tag on the right side of the transmission above the belt pulley and below and forward of the hand clutch. Both the tractor and engine serial numbers should be 6 digits long and start with "4" if its was built before 1948.

BMG you are so right! Thanks. I had transposed the numbers. The upper tag was Model EE, Ser. #403040 and 3 5/8 X 4. The lower tag you told me about (transmission?) is Model RTU, Ser. # 403293. Got any idea the tractor year? Just wrestled that thing to my place for further review. Thanks for your info, Buz

Buz,
You've got a 1940 RTU. The engine serial number also matches a 1940 EE engine. So you've probably still got the original engine. Since your serial number plate calls it out as a RTU I think your gas tank should be the type with a horizontal seam running all the way around the tank. It's a 2 piece tank with a top and bottom half. All 1939 and some 1940 RT tractor had a 3 piece tank similar to the ZT series tractor.

Thanks for the info! We've just started a club here--Antique Tractor Club of Wills Point, Texas--and are planning to spend a lot of time in research and restore.... Most of us are John Deere, though, at least up to now. We will have a website, when constructed, addressed as antiquetractorsofWP.com Come see us.
