Changed the oil and filter in the '50 ZAU, which hasn't been done in many, many YEARS. Cleaned everything inside and out, replaced the gasket, then put the new filter and shell back together. Tightened the nut at the end of the shell until the filter was firm in the shell, just as the book says. Fired up the tractor and engine oil began to run (not drip, run) out of the area around the nut. What did I do wrong?

John,
If you mean oil was leaking out the back of the filter shell (the large bolt head at the back of the shell/cover) did you put a new copper washer under the bolt head? If oil is running out I suspect you don't have a good seal between the bolt head and the filter shell/cover or you may not have a sealing washer at all.

Food for thought.

It has been a couple of months since I replaced the filter, so I can't remember if I used a new copper washer under the bolt head or not. I am guessing that maybe I did not, which would make sense, considering this oil is simply "running" out. Thanks very much for your help.
