Hi,

My name is Walter. I'm in RI but last week visited my Brother Steve in Missouri. He has a '67 Minniapolis-Moline M670 Super that he bought approx. 8 years ago. It was in boxes and had the pistons frozen in the cylinders when he brought it home, and he has slowly repaired it over the years. It is now a working tracktor on his 40 achers (sp). The problem we worked on last week was the PTO brake. We had the case open to adjust the PTO clutches. They were slipping when he was bush-hogging tall grass. We got that fixed. While we were in there we found that the PTO brake band was broken off. This allowed the PTO to spin even if it was disengaged. This is a dangerous thing with several small children in the household. We bought a new brake band and installed it. However it still does not work correctly. The linkage (inside the case on the left as you stand at the rear of the tractor) only pulls up the brake band approx. 1/8 th of an inch when the cluth is disengaged. Hardly enough to pull the band up snug on the drum. The PTO shaft will stop at times when it is disengaged and a drag is applied. ie: bushhog is still attached. If we tighten up the band any more it will rub on the cluth drum all the time and wear itself out.
My thery is that the linkage has been modified. There are several welds that do not look factory.
We have the operators manual but it does not have a complete picture of the linkage. Does anyone have any ideas or possibly a picture of the linkage involved.
I had a great time working on this with my brother. I had not ever visited his home ( almost 20 years) and it seems these old machines have a way of bringing families together.

Thanks Walter

Hi,

There is an auction this week with a MM670 Super Diesel with a WorkMaster #800 loader advertise. I would appreciate any feed back on what type of tractors those 670 are and some of the problems to look for (have read in a few post to watch for a cracked head, what would be the signs for that type of engine trouble) .

Thanks
Paschal

The pto brake was never designed to stop something like a mover or a grinder to a stop. The brake was to keep the pto from turning from internal friction of the clutch plates while an implement was not running. So it didn't free wheel and maybe hurt someone.

freddy, Thanks for the reply. We figured that out. Actually we were told this at the place where we bought the band. However with the PTO cluth disengaged, the PTO shaft still spins. The shaft is turned by the small amount of friction between the cluth plates. I was hoping that the band would hold the clutch carrier from turning when the plates are disengaged. Although the plates look OK, (not warped or burned)maybe they need to be replaced. At $35 x 7 plates, that will have to wait.

Thats a little costly for the plates, but they don't wear out very fast if taken care of. . We have 14 MM's. We have never changed any pto plates before. But if they ever slipped under power for a time i could see how they could warp. As for the pto clutch brake it should hold the pto stopped with the plates loose. The pto brake as you said must be damaged some how or been modified. Any good salvage yards up there? Well good luck. we have both a M670 super diesel and gas they are very handy on the farm.

As you have discovered the pto brake on these tractors is a total pain.We have used a Super 670 since 1967 and about 1975 we installed an external brake on the pto.We have the dual 540/1000 unit.I took a 1000 rpm knuckle yoke, machined a drum onto itand set up a band type brake that would lock down and hold things tight.

Yes them pto brakes came as an after thought I suppose. Our M670 tractors only have the 540 pto. Our G1350, G1000 Vista, G950 and G900 all have Dual pto's. I just bought a G1000 Wheatland LP. No pto. Nice old tractor, but it has the usual owner inflicted problems. By the way if anyone has a dual hydraulic system for sale (makes 4 remotes.) I need one. Good luck with the prairie gold or energy yellow.
