I'm looking for a larger radiator for my UTS. I have the KEF style engine(single block and head) and I can't seem to keep the thing below 200 degrees F. It will run about 230 pulling a 3 bottom plow and just ove 200 pulling a single row 10 foot disk. After all the things that I can possibly check and clean out I have determined that the only solution is more volume and surface area in the radiator. I don't know if I can have the radiator recored with a larger core. If so, let me know who does this type of work.

Thanks

Brian

Brian,
Just a sanity check but did you check your water pump impellor? Sometimes the fins rust away enough to hinder flow. Did you remove the lower water manifold and look for rust plugging the outlets. Sometimes scale rust will build up so much here that water can't flow anymore. An acid flush won't get this out. And be sure your thermostat is still opening (if you're running one). Since you didn't mention what you did check/replace, these are some I've found in the past.

I had the radiator recored on my '54 UTS with a core that had an extra row of tubes, behind the others. It was done at a shop in Charlotte, NC.
But I was running a 403 and 'bogging' in 4th gear, which is why it probably was running hot.

I'm guessing you've had the radiator cleaned already and done all the 'regular' stuff.
However, if you have the original engine you shouldn't have that overheating problem.

It could be a lot of scale in the cylinder jackets keeping water from circulating.

Just a thought: does your radiator still have the complete shroud around the fan? Should be running in a circle not much bigger than the fan. On a lot of them, if the fan bolt ever loosens, it wipes out the lower half of the shroud, which is usually discarded, and this will cut your cooling capacity.

Thanks Kelvin,

I did run an acid flush to try and remove and buildup in side the engine. The only thing that I can think of is the it has been overbore by 1/8 in per cylinder. Is it possible that the extra surface area of the pistons and the extra compression is generating that much more heat? They guy at the radiator shop says that it has plenty of flow but if there isn't enough surface area to pull the heat out it could still over-heat. Any other thoughts would be appreciated

I have a 1947 UTU with the KEF engine also with an .125 overbore. I had the radiator recored and no over heating problems since.

Hope this helps,

Brian

Thanks Brian,

I was wondering if you put a core in it with more tubes?
