Am looking for a tractor to move round bales. Have found a 445U with Haymaster loader. Runs well but the owner says has a bad ring gear on flywheel. Occasionally need to turn it so the starter will catch.

How hard is this to repair? I assume will need to split the tractor. Are parts available?

Value of tractor? They want $2000.

Any help appreciated.
Thanks!

If you end up needing a ring gear, I have one hanging on a nail in my shop. Let me know if you need it.

Mark,

Purchased the tractor. Am very interested in your ring gear. Also am looking for a starter as the drive on this on is badly chewed up. Please email me so we can discuss.

Thanks,

Scott

I have no idea about the flywheel but my 445 did the same thing when I got it. Turns out the starter was loose and sometimes would jam, usually when the battery was low. I tightened the starter and bought a new battery, and it works every time.

I've got a jetstar with the same problem. I've been putting it off, but you probably are going to have to split the tractor, remove the flywheel and then replace the ring gear. You might want to remove the starter and look in the starter hole to make sure its the ring gear that's bad, first.

A new ring gear will probably be pretty expensive, but I don't know how much, or even if they are available, I just assume they are.

Also, sometimes you can get more life out of a ring gear by heating it to get it off, and turning it 90 degrees. This presents fresh teeth to the starter bendix for engagement, because the engine will always come to a stop with one cylinder on compression.

The downside to this is that if that doesn't work, you'll have to split the tractor again.

You might also check the auto parts stores if it's hard to find a new one. Might be able to match something up that way.
