I was hoping some of you Moline fans out there would have some ideas in what to look for in a tractor. About all I know about MM is that they are yellow and no longer made. I have a Studebaker truck and like things that are a little different. Im looking for something with 40-70 h.p. preferably gas engine (no propane), live power, power steer, rear remote, prefer wide front, but narrow might work. Does this leave many options? I will be using this tractor quite a bit and was wondering how hard MM parts are to come by? Should I leave the molines to the collectors and look at something else? Any advise would be appreciated.

You have some choises in the sizes and and age . Older listed first. For the numbered series tractors from 1956 to 1970.. 45HP--445, 4 star, jet star, jet star2, jet star 3, jet star3 super. 55HP--5 star, U302, U302 super. 65 to 70 hp--M5, M602, M670. M670 super. These would be tractor that most often have wide front, power steering and a 3pt hitch. Feel free to email me if you have other questions.

Clint,

I had a mm445 a while back and I sold it. When I obtained it I wasn't looking to buy a MM I happened up on this one and jumped on it. I am by no means cultured in MM tractors but I will offer my view as it may help you some. Hydrolics to me would be a very important feature. Make sure it will raise, lower and control. The parts for this is very pricy not to mention hard to find which means you may end up in a machine shop for parts $$$$ per hr..! If it has a dash check out the electrical like the tach. etc. these are hard to find also and hard to get repaired. Steering, wide front has a keyed shaft (woodruff key)or(halfmoon), make sure it is(the shaft) not wallered out or stripped and welded to the tie rod plate. This would be a hard to find piece. Water pump, look here also for leaks. I am not sure how hard it is get a pump but they are different and might be a problem. The engine. I am sure you are mechanically inclined. Valves and engine parts can be hard to find. Make sure of the running gear and engine. I found this out as I come to discover the guy who owned the tractor I bought, was a friend I had not seen in years. He warned me about getting engine parts etc.. He went through alot of grief and finally gave up and sold it. It could be also he was not looking, listening and getting advice from the folks here on YT. Good luck and hope I helped you. If you would like to know more just post a reply for me and I will answer back. GOOD LUCK AND DONT'T LET GO OF YOUR PRAIRE GOLD DREAM!

Agco dealers can get most parts for M-M tractors. The Agco White dealers have always sold parts for M-M and Oliver. In the last few years as antique tractors and the need for less expencive tractors has increased more aftermarket parts companies are offering M-M parts. One of my aftermarket parts suppliers from work makes front spindles, water pumps, manifolds, and some hyd pumps. Working in the parts dept I have seen more parts being made aftermarket for M-M and other brands each year. And I have noticed Agco has lowered their price on some M-M parts from what it was 5 to 10 years ago. Finding M-M parts takes a little searching and it it geting easier and with more choises than it was.

Your MM choices are 445, 5 star, m5, 4 star,U302, M602, M670 and on the low power side Jet star. well how much do you want to spend? That is the question. the newer the tractor the easier the parts are to get. The older tractors are gettting harder to get parts for. AGCO is doing a good job of suppling part even though they are high,.Buy a parts manual and tell them the part numbers will save you a world of grief. My favorites are the U302 and M670.

Why would you put the 445 up with the 5 Star and M-5, and list the Jet Star as lower power?
The Jet Star is the tractor that took the place of the 445, it is just a 445 with better hydrolics.

What i meant was it is on the low side of your power requirements too. I forget the jet star for a second there and added it last. The 445, 4 star, jet star are all power by the same 206ci engine, but there is stories of jet stars coming out with 220 cu in engine also. Where the M670 is on the top side of you power requirements. The 445 and the jet star hydraulics have about the same capabilities, if there both good, you won't tell the difference. but you will tell the difference on the steering which is the big update to this good old tractor line. We have two 445, ones a diesel and a jet star 3. If you find a nice M5 or M602 that would be the best bang for your buck with a little extra power to boot. we have a M5 diesel with about 15000hrs on it. overhauled at 13500hrs. changed the steering to hydrostatic. Makes the tractor very responsive in the wheel.

I have a 1960 M-5 propane, although the propane is a pain in the rear, I work the snot out of this tractor. I`ve never had a proplem with it (knock wood) and wouldn`t trade it for the world.I have several Farmalls but the M-5 is a very versatile tractor!

I also have a M5 LPG with about 25,000 hours on it. Seems they run for ever if you do timely maintence. Ours ran a corn dryer every fall for days on end, plus other farm work all year long. A very good tractor.
