I'm going to an auction this weekend that has an "older MM Model R wide front gas tractor" on it. I've done some lurking around this board for the last week or so to learn a little (I'm a Farmall nut), but I'm confused about the various R versions and history of this guy. Any thoughts on what I might expect to find? I hate the "what's it worth" questions, but anything to put me in the ballpark would be helpful. The ad says it runs.

Thanks for the help! I really appreciate it.

Well, I went to the auction today. The plate said Model R, serial number 00102236 and RT100 was cast into the transmission housing below where your left foot would go while sitting on the seat. The engine plate said 3 5/8 x 4 4CYL EE, serial number 01703660.

The tin was pretty bad, an exhaust pipe hole cut in the top of the hood (pretty rough!), no head lights, broken PTO, and homemade 3pt. hitch that was really cobbled up. Tires were trash and the rim centers were welded up.

I didn't stay to see how much it went for. I guess we'll keep looking for an R.

Thanks for the help!

James,
Good thing to pass on that one. It started life as a 1951 RTU. Nothing special there. Sounded pretty hobbled up and expensive to restore. The exhaust should exit the left front corner of the hood. Sounds like someone may have put a ZT hood or manifold on it which exits the center middle of the hood. It's getting tougher to find good R rims so keep that in mind when looking for one. Keep looking you'll find a good one. Where are you located?

I'm near Rapid City, South Dakota--the western side of SD. You don't see too many MM's out here, so I was hoping this one would be in better shape.

Thanks again for the help.

James,
Let me clarify a few of Kyle's points. There were 37850 R models produced. They were broke down as follows: 3169 RT(most of which are believed to be RTU configurations), 25824 RTU, 4338 RTI, 249 RTI-M, 2049 RTS, 1115 RTE, 1106 RTN. Model descriptions: RTU - Universal - narrow front, dual wheels; RTI - Industrial - foot clutch & accelerator, solid straight front axle; RTI-M - Military industrial; RTS - Standard - fixed wide front, arched front axle; RTE - Extendable wide front; RTN - Single front wheel. The RTE is the rarest of the wide front R models and the RTI is the most common wide front R model. I've got several RTU, 3-RTI, 2-RTS Waterloo, and an RTE. Brian Rukes is a very good MM R historian. James, this could be an RTI (industrial model), RTS (standard, non-adjustable WFE), or an RTE (adjustable WFE). From a collectability standpoint, all are worth more than a standard R. There were quite a few RTS tractors made compared to the other two. I believe the RTS was introduced in '39 along with the narrow front RTU. And I believe the RTI came out the following year. The RTI is relatively rare. I think only 1200 or so RTE's were made and they were introduced in '47. I couldn't comment on how much they are worth, but...I went to an auction last year where there was what appeared to be an RTE. Didn't run, but was in nice restorable shape (good tires, sheet metal, etc.) However, the serial number indicated it was actually an RTU, so somewhere along the line, a WFE and been bolted up to it, so it wasn't original. Didn't seem to matter to the bidders - it sold for about $2500!
