Can someone tell me why the amperes guage on my Jetstar 3 has the needled buried over to the high side for the first few minutes after I start it? After a few minutes, it heads back down, but does show a continuous positive charge. This tractor will also recently not start on each try....nothing at all from the starter? Could this be the coil? Thank you for any advise.

Here is my advise to you if you have an alternator on it and I am betting you do take it off at once and have it checked right away. I would say that the rectifier has a short in it. Like maybe it has a hair line crack in it and and after it warms ups comes back down and shows on the gauge. At any rate this is going to cause you more problems with the battery, coil and points later on. Also sounds like the coil is starting to suffer now from it. An alternator really charges in a/c current the rectifier converts it to d/c current and it has diodes built into it as well. I have a friend that worked on an 18 wheeler that the alternator done this on it shot a pulse of a/c current through the whole truck and burnt every thing up in it that was turned on. But hey take this advise as you see fit. Hope you find it.

I have seen some tractors that charged a lot at startup and seemed ok after that. But with what you are saying about the starter I would clean the ground cable at the battery and at the frame. If the connection is poor at the ground cable base the tractors electrical system can act funny. The ground cable should be hooked to the trans or rear axle casting. Also check out the positive side at the battery and the starter. If you still have problems take the aldernator to your local starter shop or repair shop that has a tester and check it out. Electrical problems can be a proscess of eliminations sometimes.
