Four Star Hydrolic

I just purchased a four star tractor. The last owner told me that it broke a hydrolic line and when they replaced it the hydrolics didn't work anymore. Could the system be air bound? And how would you bleed the air out if it was? Or could it be something else all together?

Thanks for the help

If your 4star has a 3-point,and has the hydraulic filter in a canister under the left side of the seat, and all the hydraulic lines to the pump are external, meaning you have a tube from the reservoir/3point to the filter, and another to the pump. and another from the pump back to the reservoir/3-point housing, (plus a couple more if you have power steering)

Then,I would try disconnecting The tube going from the filter canister to the pump and pouring it full of hyd fluid, Then reinstall. Make sure the connections are tight. This is what I had to do to a couple of Jetstars to get them to pick up their prime after I changed filter elements.
If this is the case, It might be a good time to change your filter, too. One of my filters was just before desentegrating, which would probably have ruined my pump.

Older Jetstars with 3-point, and I presume 4stars with 3-point as well, had a totally enclosed hydraulic circuit through the transmission casting. This was neater, but seems to have been more troublesome.

If they ran it completly out of oil and kept running it the pump might be bad. I loaned my Jet Star to a neighbor once and that happened. The bearings in the pump seized and broke the gear.
