What your friend has is an R. The serial# will be on a 3x5" plate on the right side of the transmission in the area below the brake pedals. The engine will be on the same size tag on the side of the engine crankcase.

thanks john,
i went overe to his house and looked at the tractor and found the serial#. it said it was a rte. what i did not understand about the tractor was that just behind the dip stick was a extrusion from the casting with what looked to be some sort of valve. it had tubing going into it from the side of the motor and down to the oil pan i believe and up to the pressure guage. there seemed to have been a control rod on it at some time because theres a lever with a hole in it. whats this for? please reply.

Elton,
Your friend has hound an uncommon Moline R as long as it still has the adjustable wide front. The "E" in RTE stands for adjustable wide front. They only made 1115 RTE models. Did you figure out what year it was? I've got a restored 1950 RTE. They were only made from 1947 to 1953.
What you saw by the dipstick was an early live hydraulic system Moline used on the R models. There are 2 extra lobes on the camshaft that drive this hydraulic pump. The pump uses engine oil and was used to lift mounted cultivators and the like. It was slow because of its small volume pump but it sure beat lifting by hand. There should be a lever by the steering wheel that controlled this valve/pump assembly.
