A MM Virgin needs info on an R

Guys, Although I am somewhat experienced with other brands, I am a true MM virgin. Besides not being very popular here in Upstate, NY, I never learned to make sense out of all their model designations. ...but, I am colorblind, and have no real brand preference, I love 'em all. Ran accross an R that is stuck and hasn't been run in 20-25 years, but she is complete, and as original as the day is long (except the grille, and one headlight). Price is right, so the questions are: are parts still obtainable, where would I find the serial #, and what was the weight and HP? Thanks in advance, I have already done JD's, a Ford, an AC, a Massey and several Farmalls, and if you guys are as helpful, friendly and knowledgeable as the guys on those boards, then I'm in for another great experience! Guys, thanks for all the help, for now it's gonna get the cylinders filled with CRC 656 and sit until next winter; this winter's projects are already lined up. You were very helpful in my decision to get her, and I hope ya won't mind some emails when I get started. Thanks again, Pete

According to my Nabreska Tests book, the R weighed 3431 with an additional 753 pounds of ballast added to EACH rear wheel. (1951 R)

I'm from East Worcester Pete. If you're ever in the area, stop by. The latch string is always out to tractor folks. I've been messing with them for 50 years. Never met a tractor I didn't like, although my Rumely was a bit much for me to start.

dont know much about MM but i do have farmalls .try olive oil down in the cylinders it, seems to work on the seized eng that i have broken loose.take the plugs out, pour it in ,put the plugs back in, and let it sit for a while.when you think it has set long enough take the plug out and try it. (rock it ,or pull it,)takes some patience,good luck.

Use a grease gun to break it loose if its stuck bust the center out of a spark plug and weld a pipe fitting to it then put a zerk in it screw this into which ever cylinder is near the top and back of the valves on this cyl. remove the other plugs (put a little penetrating oil in all the cyl.) now starting pumping the only thing you can possibly hurt is the head gasket and that is rare, works like a champ have used this on 1100inch engines

Pete,
The serial number plate for the tractor should be located on the RH side of the transmission housing forward and below the hand clutch lever. The engine has a seperate serial number plate also. I don't have the exact weight and horsepower numbers handy but figure 20-25 hp and a little over 3000lbs depending on year and equipment. The cylinders are cast in pairs. The horizontal valve train is part of the cylinder castings but the cylinder head bolts to the RH side of both pair of cylinder castings. The engine uses long rocker arms under the valve covers on the LH side of the engine. The design was unconventional but used quite a few less parts than the competition. Stuck motors are a little more difficult to free up. I've soaked them for a while, removed the cylinder and pistons and used a block of wood cut down to fit into the opening. I've been able to dislodge most stuck R & Z pistons by standing on the cylinder casting and swinging a sledge on the block of wood. It's not easy by any means but it seems to work for me. If it has flat lens lights they are pricey but can be found. The grills are out there too for reasonable prices. If the radiator surround/shell is what you need they're a little more scarce and a good one will set you back a few bucks. There are several old MM dealers still in business with AGCO that can get most parts you'll need to restore an R. Check out>Link

The front end styles are as follows:
RTU - row crop narrow front with dual front wheels
RTI - industrial with fixed wheel spacing, foot clutch and foot throttle
RTS - standard with fixed tread wide front axle
RTE - row crop adjustable wide front
RTN - row crop single front wheel

The U,I,S,E and N suffix also apply to the Z and U series tractors of the same time period.

We purchase a 1943 RTU Moline and it has a foot clutch. Can you tell me if all 1943 had foot clutches or if this was an option? Sounds like you are knowlegeable on Molines and I thought you might know or tell me where I could find out.

Pete, yes some parts are still around and alot of parts tractors too. But a word of warning with the engine locked up it is going to be a bear to get loose. The reason is the upper blocks are one piece. Meaning the head and piston cylinders are cast together and in pairs too. You really can't press the pistons out because there is no room to do it and very little room to use a brass punch. Email me I can give more info. on what I did with a Z and my RTI.

The head is not cast togeather with the piston cyl.It is a part to itself. Glenn

turn the head upside down with connecting rod up. put blocks on either side of piston to be pulled and a pipe thru the the crank bearing with the cap on and a bottle jack on either side of the pipe and start jacking evenly. soak the pistin and cylinder wall with lube/penetrating fluid . jack a little, let set, repeat and it will pop loose. don't worry 'bout rod or piston you can find them ok
