I have a 1959 GB that I just bought and it runs
great but the clutch is VERY touchy. When I start
to engage it the tractor jumps forward, unless I
engage very slowly and carefully. It's not slip-
ping and works fine once under way. Any ideas as
to what is wrong? I'm not too up on these double
disc, overcenter clutches. Thanks, JC.

One posibility if it sat for some time is rust on the flywheel. We have had a couple with this problem (on JD ). What often helps is if you have a hill in the field or drive to try to climb. Put the tractor in 4th gear and lightly fether the clutch but dont put it over center to fully engage it. This will alow the disc to slip and clean off the rust. Take a look at the bottom of the bell housing if Im not mistaken there should be a moisture drain or vent area and check to make sure it is not pluged. It would also be good to grease the throw out bearing and while in this area also check to make sure the clutch levers are moving smothly. Also when in there check as the clutch facings may be worn enough that the rivets are grabing the flywheel and not the facings. If you need a clutch disc give me a call work as we usually stock them and I am there most of the time. The number is 231-924-3420. Hope this helps.

Also check the rear main seal and or the input shaft seal too. It could be leaking oil and maybe getting on the clutch and cause the same thing to happen as far as it being "jumpy".

Thanks guys, I'll check those things out. I doubt
it's oil or rust cause there are no drips and it
is stored in a heated garage. I'll try to rinse
the flywheel surface and look at the clutch face.

My GB does the same thing. I just have to remember to slow the throttle way down before I engage it. Mine has no leaks and has been used too much to be rusty. I think they are just rearing to go to work.
