We just had record floods in our area (Friendswood, TX). I was wondering how deep in water can an 8N go with the standard rear horizonal muffler? Also would the vertical make a lot of difference in water crossing? I would have liked to help get people and vehicles out but the N is in repair now. But I believe we are not done with high water in our area and it would be nice to be prepared next time.

As badly as you want to be helpful, I'd keep my tractor and anything else out of the flood waters. You never know where there is a wash-out and you could drop a wheel in one and turn the whole thing over. In our flood, a teacher's wife and kids tried to drive though high water on a small bridge and the bridge was gone. They were eventually found, still in their seat belts.

Alex..... .its not unusual to see cars/pickups with their exhausts bubbling away at motorboat launches at the lake. BUT.....its splashed water on the ignition that would be the killer...I wouldn't go any deeper than the front axle. If'n ya gotta do it, consider a hose on the tailpipe of the muffler as a snorkle (grin)..... .Dell

If it were mine, I wouldn't take it anywhere near a flood! Nothing worse than cold water splashing on hot parts, good way to crack something (like your block). Why risk it? Use a boat if you'd like to help.

Well, I guess I WON'T respond with: "Till it stops running", but it's really tempting.

You should be able to get up to the bottom of the carb at least. Once around the distributor, forget it. I read something recently about the transmission getting water in it, making a grinding sound, and having to be flushed/refilled iwht oil, but you may get lucky, especially if things are sealed right. Anyone else? Good luck.
