Bought my 9N at auction last fall. It's been running great and working hard.

Until today oil pressure would peg the gage on startup and never go below 25 psig at low rpm after warmed up. Now it's stuck at zip, zilch, nada.

1. Oil shows in the top half of the operating range on dipstick.
2. No oil pressure at output from crankcase to gage. (I loosened the fitting to see if anything would come out.)

If it comes to it, is it possible to R&R oil pump with the engine still on tractor? My only book is a service manual which is principally 8N and shows this work as overhaul. What's a good source for other information I may need?

Sounds like the oil pump bushing is about gone, its letting the oil "re-cycle" in the pan. Just changed mine. Rebuild kit contains gears/shaft/bushing,new bushing has to be "reemed" out for shaft clearance. I went for about a year priming mine thru the oil line until it finally quit. Overhauled it while I was in there, it'd been 27 years since the last engine overhaul I gave it.

None of the parts sites I have in my list sell an oil pump rebuild kit, at least not by that name.

Where does one look for such an item?

I use a local tractor shop/dealer here in Mo. They sell used and new parts (junked out 80-8N's in one year). They had an oil pump rebuild kit. Shouldn't be hard to find one. Good luck..

Did this problem occur after the tractor had been sitting for a few days? One of my 8Ns loses oil pressure about once every two or three years after sitting for a couple of weeks without running (loses pump prime, but I haven't tried to figure out why yet). Before you do anything else, you might want to try what I do: Take the lid off the filter canister and dribble in some oil until the canister seems full, then wait an hour and repeat the process over and over until you're really bored and impatient. Then replace the lid, fire up the engine and see if you have pressure. It works for me, and then I can go for months or even years with no further disappearance of pressure. BTW, you may have to drain some excess oil after this procedure, but it usually doesn't add more than half a quart.

Somewhere in its past, this tractor had an oil filterectomy. One of these days we're going to implant a new one. This may be a good time to round up the pieces for that, too.

I'll know more after I inspect Zane's suggestion.

The engine is the same as the 8N so the manual is OK.

I would pull the oil pan plug and see if you can move the oil pump pickup tube that is hangine over the drain hole. If you can or if it is out of place the pan will have to be removed to replace the pickup tube. Don't even try to fix it. You will be far better down the road to replace it. The oil pump would not be affected by the tube coming off. They were silver soldered and it is a common problem with the N engine.

You will be way ahead of the game if you will pull the hood and tank off the tractor to begin with and then the front axle and the radiator. The axle is attached to the oil pan by six bolts and nuts and you can roll it out when everything is removed. The radius rods come off at the back end and the tie rods at the front end to make moving the axle easier.

Then the pan can be easily removed and it will be much easier to re install it later.

The good news is the pickup tube is firmly attached. The bad news is probably the same.

Looks like all your instructions for oil pan R&R will be put to good use while I go after the pump.

Now and then I notice my fathers 8N has no oil pressure. I check the oil-and sure enough, there is none. So far the engine hasn't been terminally destroyed but I'm sure its not getting any better!
