If my memory is correct,I read the proper way to shut down my 8N would be too turn off the fuel valve and let the tractor starve itself of fuel then turn off the Ignition Switch. Or would it be more correct just to turn off the ignition switch and then go into the house and tell the wife I had a great day on the tractor and let her know I love her almost as much as my tractor. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

Seems to me if the designers wanted you to turn off the gas first, then the valve would have been up near the dash. The updraft carbs on the 8N is lot like the ones M-S put on thousands of light aircraft. Turn off ignition first, then shut off gas.

Once I have parked the tractor in the barn, I turn off the ignition switch. Then I get off the tractor and close the fuel shut-off valve. This procedure works fine for me.

I have devloped a routine with my 8N. As I am pulling up to the barn to put it away, I reach around and shut the valve off. Unless I am real slow, there is more than enough gas to get it in and parked. I then turn it off with the ignition. There is no need to run it dry! You just want to run enough out so the carb is not full.

Then when I go to run it again, just like you mount your horse from the same side, I walk up on the left side, put the key in and open the valve. With advancing CRS, I need to have a routine so I don't drive off with out the valve on. Likewise, I need to be sure to shut off the valve - I will even do it if I am stopping to tractor for a while out in the field.

You should ALWAYS shut off the valve. You never know when something will keep the valve from closing tight. A flooded flat head engine is VERY hard to start. You can run down a battery trying to clear out the excess gas in the carb throat.

My $0.02

Larry

One of these days your going to reach forwards and fall off. I guarantee it won't starve for fuel before your toasted under the wheels.

Just a thought. If you let the fuel run out while in the house with the wife, and the tractor sits there with the key on and not running, wouldn't that possibly burn out the coil/points? I would watch the tractor until it quit, and then go clean up and play.

Tennessee Man, What works best for me is shutting off the fuel and while I'm waiting for the tractor to run out of gas I can go to the house and tell the wife how great she is and how lucky I am to have her with me. Then I can go back to turn the key off on the tractor and tel it how great it is and how lucky I am to have her with me. Pull the key out and hang it on the throttle. Cover her up with some blankets and all will be right with the world.

If I'm not going to use the tractor for a while I too would shut off the fuel, let it run dry then shut off the ignition but if I plan on using the tractor the next day or so I skip running it dry. Then I too go into the house and tell the wife how much I love her and she usually replies"what do you want to buy now?"
I give up,
Mike
