Some of you have no doubt seen the 9/2/8N head for sale on e-bay which has been milled down (maybe a teensee bit too much!)

Seller claims that there is (min) 0.045" clearance between head/pistons with one gasket and the head torqued down. Would sort of seem to me that's plenty of clearance for the pistons, (but then again, why sell it if it was usable???)

Anyhow, my 8N head has a hairline crack that runs along the top surface. It "weeps" water slightly, but's been like that for years without "growing." I was considering this "milled" head as a potential replacement.

Is (assuming it's accurate) the 45 thou' sufficient?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, I agree, be weary. New heads only cost about $150.00. I personally would not take a chance like that with a milled head. Be weary of bargain parachutes, heart transplants and milled heads.

OnRon- Recommend be wary of anything in the on-line auctions.

Better yet, ponder why fuss about the head you describe. Is coolant leaking into the engine? If so, yes, take action.

If not, ponder options. Suggest you drain the cooling system, wire brush and sandpaper the external crack area, wipe down with an appropriate solvent, then give the area a coat of one of the popular epoxy patch materials.

Take plenty of time between steps, to let things dry and cure. When done, give the area a shot of paint and you'll probably be done with the problem.

Good luck, IHank
