I would like to build a putting green where my pond sits now. The grass will be bent grass. Anyone here have any experience in what type of matter is below the grass surface so I can fill it in. Off topic but very wise people in this forum with a ton of info. Thanks for everything, Paul

Paul,
Depending on the part of the country your in will determine what type of grass to use. Bentgrass is used where the tempature and humidity takes a rest once in a while. If your in a climate like Fla. consider Bermudagrass. I would think long and hard about putting in a green, they are not too expensive to build but they need daily care to keep them alive. The cost of spraying fungicides, mowing and spraying equipment, as well as time commitment can become a real pain in the a## if your not totally committed to maintaining it correctly. If you don't keep up with the maintenance it won't be worth having. If your sure you want to go ahead and build it check with a local golf course supt. for help, or the state golf course supt assn. Another source is gcsaa.org the international assn. I have been a supt. for twenty years and have built greens for members in their yards. They usually get tired of the $ burdon and have me remove it five years later. It's alot easier to drive over to the local course and putt.
Best of Luck
Andy

Paul,

Curt obviously has more experience and already gave good advise. About 15 years ago I built a putting green in the back yard using bentgrass the country club super. sold me (only need a few pounds). Install good drainage, I had to add lots of sand to our very clay soil. I seem to recall the experts using some gravel base and 4" pipe. I remember a few articles in golf mags about them ripping up and rebuilding some major greens, using laser mapping to restore the original contour, all to improve drainage. I kept it well fertilized, watered and cut (every few days at most) but I was always battling fungus or other disease problems. I used a power reel mower (a cross between the old fashioned push mower and a modern gas lawn mower engine). You may want to consider installing at least 1 underground sprinkler head/port in the center of the green for easier watering. There are lots of good books and materials available about turfgrass management, I had a green covered one from Ortho, very helpful. This was almost my career choice, but I ended up doing computer software and now am dreaming/working towards farming. Email if you want, I will help all I can.

Paul- I started building a putting green for a local Dr. in his backyard a few years ago. Had all the tile drain pipe laid, had it located well, had an old walk behind greens mower bought, and then WHAM! he gets a divorce and sells the dang house! I was a golf course supt. for 6 years, but got really tired of being called a "greenskeeper" so I quit. Best advice Icould give is to go to your local golf course and find the man in charge or if your state has a turfgrass association would be your best bet. Bentgrass is fairly tough but you need to be prepared to keep it mowwed, keep it watered, keep it fertilized and keep an eye open for bugs and fungus type diseases(especially during hot, humid weather). Hope this helps. If I can help, just send me an E-mail.

I'm no expert but I do know a couple of guys who built a nine hole course one winter with 2 4020 green things and box blades. In this part of the country (Wichita, KS.) I recall they used a light sandy loam. It allowed the rolled out sod to "grab" it quickly and offered good drainage too. FWIW

Over here in New Jersey, when we build putting greens, we typically put Jimmy Hoffa under there. He stays right there, and keeps quiet.
