the battery in my 9n keeps going going dead.Someone said that the cutout relay was staying closed .I took it a part and it was in the open opsition so it must be somthing eles.
The other day I tryed to charge the battery and the needle on the charger started to jump around
like the battery was bad.so today I took the battery out of the 9n and it started to charge.
so does these mean that I have a dead short in the wiring system.
Also if I jump it with the truck it will start.

A sure sign of the cutout relay staying closed is the amp meter discharging about 15 to 20 amps when the engine is not running. Belive me, I know.

If you don't have an amp meter, pull the fan belt and watch to see if the generator spins on its own.

By the way, I had a cutout that would stay closed (see amp meter discharge above) but a solid TAP on the case would cause it to open. I Hate Cutout Relays. I had a period of time where I tried three, all of which never charged the battery.

I took the advice of someone on this board and pursued a voltage regulator replacement (thats right, voltage regulator) for my 2N. Follow the link below.

I installed this gizmo back in May of this year and haven't had to charge the battery since. I use the 2N evey week to cut about 4 acres of grass and no problems. The battery stays fresh and engine cranking is strong. I highly recomend this product.

Good Luck - Ed

I would like to offer my gratitude to Claus on behalf of all the guys on this board with electrical problems on their N series tractors. Claus gave me lots of advice and troubleshooting techniques while I was working out my charging issues. Thanks again Claus.

What does the ammeter show when the tractor is at rest with the key off? If the cutout is stuck the ammeter should show several amps of discharge. Do not remember the exact number but both the armature and field will draw current. If this is the case, remove the wire from the generator and see if the discharge goes away. If the ammeter is not working, this is the time to buy a new one. If the cutout is not the problem, then start disconnecting wires until you find the one that is causing the problem and see what attaches to it..
Happy motoring
Claus
