Today I tried to troubleshoot my lift problem on my 8N. The lift drops when the clutch is depressed.

I followed Zane's instructions:
Pulled right inspection cover, cranked up tractor with lift under load and observed.

Out of the cylinder there was more than a drip, but less than a stream of hyd. fluid. It just continually spurted a small amout of fluid.

I did not observe any great movement of fluid around the back of the pump where the relief valve is located. I chickened out and did not put my finger on valve while tractor was running. (Think I'm still gunshy after losing a battle with a router rigged with a biscuit cutter)

However, I did notice a lot of fluid movement around the front left hand side of the pump. When I pulled off the fill cover (by the shifter) I could see oil swirling and spurting front left. With the PTO disengaged, the swirl abated (almost disappeared) at low speed while it was quite visable at high engine rpm. The tractor has a front end loader installed so it was somewhat difficult to get a view instide of case, but I used a flashlight and mirror and am fairly confident of my above report.

I also noticed that with the unit under load, but with the driveshaft to the bush hog disconnected, there was still a pronounced metallic knocking or rapping noise. The lift pulsated with the noise and the whole tractor vibrated. I had thought this noise and vibration was caused by the driveshaft and gearbox on the bush hog.

The fluid was fairly clear and not discolored. BTW, I found a shiny dipstick in the bottom of the case; it had evidentaly broken off feel into the case.

While feeling around, it seems like there aren't moving parts around the safety valve. If I decide to try to feel the valve while the unit is running, what (or WHERE) do I have to watch out for?

I buttoned it back up while I wait for Allison to clear. Made for great rock and trout fishing on the Chesapeake today.

Many thanks.

Very good observations!

First thing I would do is to replace the piston in the ram cylinder with an NAA piston which had the rubber ring and washer. It will do a much better job of holding the leaking oil back. If you have a steady stream coming out that may well be your biggest leak.

Since you have a loader on it I would almost bet that the relief valve needs to be replaced. They aren't that expensive and it is better to do it when the cover is off if the oil is out of the system because you can see it better.

You can get the relief valve out by using an 11/16" boxed end wrench to take it out while the PTO shaft is still installed if you cut the wrench off just long enough to clear the side of the lift housing. Other wise you may have to pull the PTO shaft to turn the wrench.

The knocking is pretty much standard for the N hydraulic pump. It is caused by wear in the brass driving bushings being worn. It won't hurt a thing and will usually mostly dissapear when the leaking internally is eliminated except for when the lift is being raised. When not pumping oil under pressure it will not knock.

See my link below.

Another question if you please...

How does the fluid/pressure get transferred from the pump to the ram cylinder?

I'm not an expert but i think through a oil line tube. Remember seeing one while replacing my ram piston. While looking in the right inspection plate i believe its to the right up against the housing
