Oil in the exhaust

I have a '52 8N and recently I noticed a lot of smoke from the exhaust and even oil being ejected with the exhaust. I assume that the engine is burning oil due to a bad seal or gasket. I may be asking a very simple question but what does this signify? Is this a problem for the weekend mechanic or should I take it to the shop?

Any insight would be helpful, thanks.

Before you pull that motor apart I would check the oil breather. If it is plugged you could be building up back pressure in the crankcase forcing the oil up through the rings. Dave

Excessive smoke and oil coming out the exhaust is usually an indication of worn or stopped up oil rings in the engine. The "bad seal" would be ring "lack of" seal. When the rings wear they can no longer control the oil and it works it's way up into the combustion chamber where it is burned and comes out the exhaust as smoke. The above condition is usually accompanied by fouled plugs. The oil that you see in the exhaust is common in a worn engine. A "wet-dry" compression test would be the place to start in determining condition of the engine. Search archives for compression tests and results; The explanation can get lengthly. Your discribed condition could require a complete engine overhaul. An overhaul is not beyond the possibility of someone with average mechanical ability, a set of tools and somewhere to work. This board has talked quite a few individuals through their first overhaul. Parts are available through sponsors of this board. Good luck, ray
