Can anyone tell me if they hand crank there 9n , when winter rolls around I am wondering if this is easier than putting battery in and out of tractor, just to run tractor on occasions so it does not sit all winter without running, thanks for the help here..

I've never removed the battery in my 8N in the 11 years that I have been using it for snow removal. A fully charged battery will have no problems turning over the tractor. On those really cold days I'll plug in the inline heater in the lower rad hose to give everything a break. But working bare handed to remove and replace a battery in winter sounds like punishment to me.

I have one of these and they're great. Read more about it at their site linked below. The cheapest one I found on the net was from these guys ($42 plus $6 shipping).

My 2n starts good with the 6v system so I haven't gotten around to getting a crank for it yet.
But I will.
I grew up with/around tractors - a big Case DC3
an an Allis WD and my dad never did get around to fixing the elec. starting starting systems on either of them. Both of them had magnetos and we always hand cranked them.
Dad taught me how to do it safely when I was about 12
and I did it without an accident till I left home for the Navy. Much as I love this forum I do think it's a little prejudiced against hand cranking. It seems like everyone is scared of it maybe. I see comments like "why set the tractor to start and then stand in front of the thing to start it"
Let common sense prevail and work safely and you should be fine.
I'd like to find a magneto and a crank for my 2N so that I could dispense with the battery completely if it didn't want to start on battery.
Hand cranking is a good option for you. Go for it.

Why not use a solar trickle charger?

Anthony, I think you would be wise to invest in a small inexpensive 6 volt battery charger than to try starting your tractor with a hand crank. I don't know, but I've heard too many stories of accidents using a crank. Anyway summer has just started and it's too soon to be thinking winter. Burrrrr, Hate the thought of it.
