I have an old 8N with the distributor on the front. I don't know exactly what year model it is. I'm having trouble with the firing. I was wondering where I could buy a coil for it. I think that may be the problem. I had a guy to work on it and it ran for a while, backfiring and missing some and then it got to where it wouldn't crank at all. The guy that worked on it said he wasn't getting fire to the coil at first and then he tinkered with it some and finally got it going. I'm not much of a mechanic. Is there a web sight where I can get info on this without having to buy the complete manual? Please write soon, its planting season. Thanks Ronald

If you have a can of starting fluid spray some into the air cleaner. If it starts you have problems with the fuel system. Probably some foreign matter in the bottom of the carb such as dirt or water.

If it won't fire with starting fluid it is in the ignition and could be the points condenser etc.

Remove wire to the coil from the resistor and check to see if you get a spark from the wire when you strike it to the frame of the tractor. If you do then remove the distributor cap and coil and take the distributor off the tractor by removing the two retaining bolts. When you put it back on be sure the offset on the shaft is in line with the offset on the cam gear.

With the distributor off the tractor reconnect the coil wire and put the coil back on top of the distributor with the cap and wires off. Connect the base of the distributor to the tractor frame with one jumper cable. Using a cloths pin connect a wire from the base of the dist. to about 1/8" from the terminal that connects the distributor cap to the distributor. Turn the dist shaft and there should be a blue spark between the gap of the small jumper wire between the terminal and the base. If no spark you should turn the distributor till the points are open and then using an insulated handle screwdriver make contact between the two open point contacts. If it now fires you have a bad set of points and they are not making contact when they come together. They should be replaced. If you have no spark anywhere then you should try grounding the incoming spring connector from the coil at the bottom of the coil to the base of the distributor with the points removed from the distributor and also the condenser. If there is still not any spark from the coil you should replace the coil.

The first thing I would do is see if you have spark. If not, short out the ignition switch. Got spark yet? If not, short out the resistor. Got spark yet? If not, run a wire from battery - to the coil(your tractor should be + ground). Got spark yet? If not I would replace coil, points, and condencer.

One of the other posts mentioned an ignition switch as a possible problem. That is true and I would look there first especially. Those switches are notorious gremlins and even act intermittently which really throws one off the right path to fix. Jumper around the switch next time you have a problem.

Look at this show-off Ed, Click here for links. Ed you amaze me with your computer talent as well as tractor knowledge. Heck I can't get my computer to do anything I want, well it probably would if it knew what I wanted it to do. Stan

chuckle..... ..Thanks Stan, I appreciate the kind comments. I've got about as many years in the computer business as Zane has in the tractor business. However, when it comes to tractor knowledge, folks like Zane and John Bower (tOTG) have forgotten more than I'll ever know.

Regards..... ..... Ed

You can go to the link below to determine the year. The coils are availible. But I would do some more checking first.

Ronald, I would check all your wiring for shorts especially where the wires go into and out of the wire loom over the plugs. I had the same thing on an old tractor that I drug home about 5 years ago. A new wiring harness did the trick, then the tinkering, fixing, tuning can begin. Good luck and let us know what you found.

You are at the right site. If you tinker with it and get it running you probably have a circuit problem leading to the coil, ignition switch, resistor, old wiring, etc. Without knowing what you have it would be difficult to tell you where to check and what. Suggest you go to the top of the page and search the archives. Recent search using "ingition" gave about 1,500 hits. There are links directing you to year/model identification. Sponsors of this board sell just about anything you need for an N series tractor. Good luck, ray
