I am getting ready to repair the hydraulic lift on my 8N. Symptoms were lift not staying raised. Visual inspection showed lots of fluid spraying towards front of pump, could not see exact source and intermittant spurt from aft end of cylinder.

I just received the June 2000 FO4 manual. What a difference from the 1953 version I had been using.

I'm not sure what parts exactly to order and from what source.

I think I need:

8N Ford tractor hydraulic lift adjusting jig and manual for adjusting the lift.----- from Zane to adjust the rig when finished

5 gallons minus a quart of WalMart hydraulic fluid.

Safety relief valve - may as well as long as everything is apart

NAA clyinder (here I'm not sure- is it a kit, various parts... if so, what parts.

Is a gasket needed for hydraulic pump and top cover?

How expensive/difficult would it be to rebuild the hydraulic pump while it is out? Is it worth it?

What am I forgetting???

Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe you just wrote it wrong, but you don't want hydraulic fluid in there.----Michael

From what I gather, the 143D is what is generally used. From a post by Dell:

"Ford/New Holland recommends M2C-134D hydraulic oil. 60 years ago 90wt gear oil was recommended. You may use what ever you wish, I use M2C-134D.

Wal-Mart often times, has 5 gallon buckets on sale about $20."

I found it in 2 gallon containers at the local Wally.

My '52 8N was having similar problems and after talking to the local Ford / NH shops, they said that the pumps are never the problem. They said that usually the problem is with the top cover ram cylinder rings being blown. The top cover kit, which included all gaskets, orings, seals, etc cost about $13. It is TISCO part #LCRK928. They said that most of the ram pistons should have been upgraded from the 3 ring type to the oring seal type and so this kit is for the upgraded piston, but if not the new style piston cost about $23.

They said that the pump is bulletproof and I could do more harm than good trying to work on it.

The pump on the N tructor is a pretty tough old piece of machinery. I personally would not start working on it unless I were sure it needed it.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

Are you sure that you saw oil spurting from the front of the pump or was it coming from the front of the ram cylinder?????

There are gaskets where the ram cylinder bolts to the lift cover and they do rupture and blow out from time to time. Unless one of the pump chamber covers on the pump has come loose the pump usually does not spray oil from the front.

Zane,

I saw a lot of splashing/flow from the upper left corner of the tranny housing/casting (look at it through the fill plug); not from the pump per se. The pump easily raises the lift with a bush hog on it and maintains position. Thus, the pump is working. It may well have been through the front of the cylinder.

Popster..... .If'n you're saying that you looked in thru the tranny fill plug up by the shifter, then the oil splash that you saw is normal. The tranny gears actually pump oil and splash lube all over inside the tranny.

This is not the same housing that the hydraulic pump is inside of. Most people remove the 6" round disc with the tranny dipstick and look inside for hydraulic oil squirts from the piston. Hope this clarifys things..... .Dell

Dell,

Your post explains the splash I saw through the fill plug. However, I did notice a splashing toward the front left by the pump while looking through the right inspection cover. Could this be due to a leak in the cylinder? The leak in the back was an intermittant (although fairly constant) spurt. When the clutch is depressed, the lift falls immediately down.

I just may pull the right inspection plate off again and have another look just for the sake of learning....

Popster..... ..the splashing in the hydraulic pump chamber is generally associated with the pressure relief valve 8N638, which is the principle reason your hydraulic lift won't stay up. The hydraulic cylinder leak is the squirt down the back. Most of the time, they replace the original N-Hydraulic lift piston with the much better NAA piston which uses rubber "O-rings" instead of steel rings..... ..Dell

Chris,

Thank you for the reply. I believe that Zane's instructions/jig include a cam follower pin. Can you elaborate on exactly which parts I need to order or should I just give Don a call? Too often I find myself waiting for that one part I either forgot to order or never knew about....
