It seems like it will never stop raining and my 9N has been resting in a tractor cacoon, under a tarp in my driveway. I have the head off and am trying to remove the valves. The larger valves came out pretty easy but the smaller ones (exhaust or intake?) seem to be really stuck. I think that I need to pry the valve guides down to remove the retainer clips at the top of the springs(closest to the manifold openings) but they seem to be rusted fast to the block. I can compress the springs rather easily but that doesn't seem to help to pull the clips. Am I correct in assuming that the valve guides must move down a little to get the clips out? By the way, the valves appear to be the mushroom type, and the lifters must have been replaced at some point because they look like they have the adjustable nuts. This may be a good thing but I don't think the lifters make any difference with my current battle. Any ideas on tool to buy or any other way to loosen the guides in the block? Thanks, Chuck

chuck, i had to remove mine recently. i used a cotter pin extractor to get the retainers off. these tools can be purchased at any tool store cheap. i had a couple that were stubborn and i bent the tabs down and grabbed the tabs with vice grips and tapped the vice grips with hammer and they came right off. after the retainers were off then took brass punch and tapped on bottom of valve guides and the whole assembly came out the top. i was watching the KC news the other nite and they said this was the wettest June on record. good luck, roperboy in sedalia, mo

I made a tool this spring from advice at my engine machinist, out of a piece of 1/2" rod or about, heated it up cherry red hammered it some to flatten and kinda crook in it and quenched it in water to harden it(broke it several times) then I stuck a small bal peen end hammer into exhaust port above the tool instead of wood (desperate times you know, here)now you don't want to use a big ole long handle , but you're on the right track. Yes, with mushroom valves this is the only way they come out,Good Luck!

I don't know if this is right or wrong, but it is what I had to do for some of my valves.

I took a scrap flat bladed screw driver and put about a 45 degree bend on it. There was just enough room to get a purchase on the side of the guide through the exhaust port. I pried down enough to get the clip off with a pair of needle-nose pliers. Then the whole assembly came up and out with a slight persuasion.

Another one I had to use a regular old C-Clamp type valve spring compresser to compress the spring upward. Put the fork on the base of the spring and the compression rod on the center of the top of the valve. Compress the spring enough to remove the half moon keeper (2 pieces). I then slid the valve up and out, removed the spring sideways and then sprayed the guide with penetrant and had an adult beverage. When I was done I used a wooden dowel and gently tapped the guide downward in the block just enough to remove the clip. Then I had to drive the guide up and out of the block with the dowel and a gentle hammer. I cleaned the guide, and the hole with penetrant and a scotch-brite pad. Valve assembly just slid back in like it is supposed to.

Hope This Helps!!!

Howdy Chuck,
I'm in south central Kansas and I can identify with the rain never ending(-; Anyway, pushing the guides down slightly will make retainer removal much easier. Spray some penetrating oil in the ports so it will soak down around the guides. I used a very big flat blade screwdriver to pry mine down. Just go in the ports and pry down on the top of the guide. A few I had to work at and spray a couple of times. I also slipped a thin piece of wood in on the top of the port so I wouldn't gouge the surface up to bad while prying. Oh, small valves = exhaust. Have fun.
