Long time ago compression was down in the mud; based on my post, Dell suggested cleaning the valves. I cleaned and lapped the valves, then replaced the tappets with adjustables and set the valve clearance to spec. I've put it all back together (finally - this has gone on for weeks, I'm slow and don't get much time.) All really went well, but ... my 2N won't start. I have spark in all cylinders- it is kinda orange, not pretty blue. I have gas all the way to the carb, and I have adjusted the carb as outlined in FO-4. I only have 75-80-60-60 dry compression, but I haven't had the engine running so the only oil in the pistons is what I poured down the plug holes last weekend. I can't think of a reason why it won't start. Any suggestions? One more thing, but I think it is not supposed to count. I have never been able to set the timing on the distributor as described in the FO-4. When I rotate the shaft so that the tang is in position exactly as shown in Fig FO83, my contacts are NOT "just starting to open". They are fully closed, regardless of where I position the timing plate and lock screw. Also, while I'm griping about my distributor, the rotor has dug a groove into one of the distributor cap contacts. The first time I noticed this was when the tractor stopped running. I replaced the bushings and thought the problem would be solved. The tractor would not start and I went looking for other problems, like sticky valves (which WERE a mess). So this latest groove has come about just from my attempts to start the tractor. Help! Wife is due back from Stillwater in 3 hours and she really wants her parking space in the garage back after all this time.
