Long time ago compression was down in the mud; based on my post, Dell suggested cleaning the valves. I cleaned and lapped the valves, then replaced the tappets with adjustables and set the valve clearance to spec. I've put it all back together (finally - this has gone on for weeks, I'm slow and don't get much time.) All really went well, but ... my 2N won't start. I have spark in all cylinders- it is kinda orange, not pretty blue. I have gas all the way to the carb, and I have adjusted the carb as outlined in FO-4. I only have 75-80-60-60 dry compression, but I haven't had the engine running so the only oil in the pistons is what I poured down the plug holes last weekend. I can't think of a reason why it won't start. Any suggestions?

One more thing, but I think it is not supposed to count. I have never been able to set the timing on the distributor as described in the FO-4. When I rotate the shaft so that the tang is in position exactly as shown in Fig FO83, my contacts are NOT "just starting to open". They are fully closed, regardless of where I position the timing plate and lock screw. Also, while I'm griping about my distributor, the rotor has dug a groove into one of the distributor cap contacts. The first time I noticed this was when the tractor stopped running. I replaced the bushings and thought the problem would be solved. The tractor would not start and I went looking for other problems, like sticky valves (which WERE a mess). So this latest groove has come about just from my attempts to start the tractor.

Help! Wife is due back from Stillwater in 3 hours and she really wants her parking space in the garage back after all this time.

OkRon, where are you located? I notice you must be farily close to Stillwater. Of course, from the name, I am in OKcity, but I work in Chandler. For what it is worth, orange sparkies didn't help me get mine running. I didn't have all the problems you are running into, but I did change all the wires, plugs, points, etc. Did the carb too. What fixed it so it would be consistent was when I replaced my coil.

Timing sounds like a dumb stunt I pulled. Had the dist. apart and didn't get the pins back in the groves on the timing advance weights. You said you had bushings installed so this may be your problem. Usually an orange spark means a bad or weak capacitor (condensor).

It's got to be timed correctly! The points must open when they are suppose to.Why can't you adjust the distributor?

Ron..... ..while the orange spark is not "quality sparkies", it should be enuff to set off a shot of ether quick stare in the carb mouth. Anyways thats what I'd do at this point in time.

I don't have a clue about your distributor problem except that the points must open to create a spark, even if'n its just orange (grin). There is more going on than I can determine from you distribiutor description. Since you claim to have rebushed your distributor, it should have gotten rid of any wobble. Distributor cam lobes are really pretty tuff. The points rubbing block is designed to wear. I'd suggest a new set of points..... ....Dell

I tried starting fluid about an hour ago. Nothing. I thought my New Holland dealer was open til 5 today, so I ran with the distributor over there hoping someone in parts or service could take a look at it and tell me if I'm crazy. I put new points and a new distributor plate in when I replaced the bushings. Anyhow, New Holland was closed. Wasted 40 minutes.

The points do open, they just are not in the open position when the tang on the back is set the way the FO4 tells me to set it. I have no problem setting the gap, either. .015, just like the manual says.
