First off, no this is not a scam or anything "with a catch"! I just thought I would provide free N-Forum tractor photo space on one of my Internet servers. I currently do this for 40+ guys over at the toyotaoffroad forum and they LOVE the service. They should - they get to store 100MB space EACH for free on a VERY fast Internet server. (how nice I am to those lunatics!)

Of course they are young guys and have plenty of videos, movies, sound files etc. that take up tons of space! I was thinking of just making one big account for the whole N board to use and that way I wouldn't have to worry about signing everyone up individually. This site would be for tractor N-series photos only. No games, movies, applications or anything. No sharing this site with the WHOLE damn YTMAG.COM forum people - I will limit space on the account so that some wise-a$$ doesn't bring it all down. Respect the service and it will stay.

Let me know what you think. I can probably set it up this weekend. Note, I have not registered a domain for the N stuff, so I might create one and then do that first. But, first is anyone interested in this?

Regards,
Andy

Sounds Good. MSN Communities is free, but only gives 3 megs.

Check it out.

Andy,

I like your idea, but have some ideas I'd like you to consider.

Background: Sometime shortly after the Apple Macintosh was introduced (1984), a site called Info-Mac started up. It was hosted by SUMEX, which was Stanford University Medical something. It was (still is) a moderated digest of questions and answers, much like the YT boards are lots of questions with answers from the more experienced guys. Guys would email their questions/answera to a common mbox which the moderators would periodically gather and issue a digest. The digests used the old Unix bulletin board style.

Some time a little later, they set up a directory where they could store programs people had written and wanted to share. You could FTP into the "archive" and download programs, etc. Late in the 80's space for the submitted software got crowded. The moderators asked if the readers would spring for $5 to $10 each to buy a hard drive for added space. The responce was such that they got a drive about ten times the size they were planning on.

Would such an arraingement be possible with your site? As I remember, someone had a business that he could take credit card "orders" over the net. He voluntered to act as "point man" for the collection - not that I'm expecting anyone here to do that, but it made sending $ very easy and quick.

The other thing about the Info-Mac site, was that it was "maned" by volunteers. Think you should consider doing the same. There are several very knowlegeable computer types here on the N-Board. How I would suggest that you use any "volunteers" would be to act as "screeners/catalogers/ftp'ers" with all pictures for posting being simply emailed to a common email box. On some (rotating if you have several "helpers") schedule the email would be "read" and the picts posted into appropiate directories. The location would then be email back to the submitter for their use in a posting to the N-Board. Almost everyone can do email, and if they have a good mailer to use, the mailer makes adding a .jpg image VERY easy. I suspect the computer "shy" (ie those that CLAIM :-) to be computer illiterate) guys would be more happy not having to "learn" how to do FTP. :-)

I suggest this so that a set of directories could be set up to help organize the pictures/scans. One of the directories I can think of would be a bunch of the stuff that Ed Gooding has from his "paper" collection - good stuff to share! Another would be to have directories for each different implement.

I have a Photopoint account, but I am NOT happy with it! Would LOVE to have a site where the .jpg files could be simply linked into a post using the approprate HTML code. The best thing would be for the files to reside at the YT site, but Kim is busy enough with other things, so it is not going to happen on YT. AND, that is OK - this is not a complaint, just being realistic. In this life, we seldom get the best that can/could be done.

I just got back from my farm, or I would have made this reply much soomer. Email me if you'd like to discuss my suggestions further.

Regards,
Larry

While reviewing your lengthy post, I began to ponder the newly developed size of this seemingly hardless offer to host tractor pics! I never envisioned this server to be a fully manned orbital space station with shifts of volunteers and schedules for posting services? Just how much time do you think I have - must less care to spend on offering free photo space.

Larry, I appreciate and respect your visions concerning this project.

I respect your larger dreams for my offer, however simple is good. So, I will simply offer this in closing. I can offer a tons of free photo-hosting webspace on a very fast (OC-3) 155Mb/sec server for the forum guys here to store pics and link to them in text. Perhaps at a later time we can use this server to catagorize, organize and display the N-series in all of its digital photo fame!

I suggest we do the following:
- Register a tractor photo .com for ease of identity and the "coolness" factor. (already done and paid for by me)

- Change the DNS props of the new domain so that I can host the domain on my servers (not ready yet)

- Launch a FTP/WWW server on that domain for hosting the tractor pics etc. Setup one general account with access to post not delete and limit the disk quota to 100MB.

- Provide the users access to the site and allow FTP'ing to the main account and then linking to the pics. (will cover this in detail)

Contrary to popular belief, FTP'ing is very easy and straightforward. Use a good client and then click - click you are all done.

Larry, we might want to explore the possibilities on launching a nice N-Series webpage and have a "PHOTO ALBUM" where we could showoff all of the tractors, some bio, nicknames and the owners.

But let's start with the basics first.

Let's talk - I may certainly need a web assistant

Well, here is the ole' scoop of the day.

The files will have to be uploaded via FTP. For those who don't know how to use all of this, I can write a small FAQ/tutorial. I suggest you goto www.download.com and grab a FTP Client program. I use WS_FTP and it works very nicely.

Since I am giving all of you access to the one directory, I will limit it down to like 5 or 10 simultaneous users on the server. This means that everyone will have access to everyone else's stuff - however no one will have the ability to delete anything (I reserve that command for myself to avoid problems) I may rountinely decide to "purge" the directory and all of the files to make room for the new ones. I am probably going to limit the space to about 100MB total -

I am setting it up now - I will start a new message with the details.

Thx.
Andy

Andy, that's a great idea and a great way to give back to the N-board. And I'll bet with your engineering background you can make it easy for everyone to use.

Boys, I sure the he11 would. Why just the other day I was thinking to myself, it sure would be nice to see the old boys again. Dick, Rod, Peter, Johnson. I even heard a rumor that old John Thomas might even post a few pictures. Tell me that you don't have enough web space to post my old tractor and you and I are gonna tangle.

Is anything Really Free?

I hope so. It sounds like a Great Idea. But as some of the other guys have said, " You need to keep it simple" For us ( computer challenged ) guys.

My other thought was: Are you starting a Personal Collection of Every N-Tractor Ever Built?

Oh Well, If you are, that just means you are a true N-thusiast.

What a Photo-Album that will be. Maybe you could make a Hard Copy and make a few bucks.
Thanks for the Help

Andy,
Thats a great idea and a generous one to boot. One question, What about the other boards? The reds, greens and oranges? A lot of us are multiple owners and might sneak in something different. 3 kids and 1 piece of candy?

It sounds great Andy, You do relize of course that you would have people like me that that are not computer wizzes driving you nuts trying to use it.
I am envious of the things you and the others that can do the neat things you do with the computer. I wish there was a school around here that gave a course on doing that sort of thing.
Dave <*)))><

PS. Believe it or not, some people think I am a computer wiz for the little bit I can do on the computer. Every time I come to this forum I relise how much I don't know about computers and N tractors.

Sounds like a plan. What would the "Rules" be? Could I still sneak in a few "Coors light" tractor pics??(-:

As it is right now, It's hard to find "Any" site that's free anymore, I was useing Photopoint and Geocities, Photopoint started chargeing and Geocities won't let you copy and paste pics to other sites anymore. Keep us posted, thanks

later,dave

No rules about the pics --- just need to keep the space relatively low ---> Coors pics are fine. No restrictions on anything else. I need more of a response from you guys before I go through the process of getting it all setup. It will be sweet!
