Removed starter this evening. Here are some pictures. Can anyone tell me if this is the "new" style bendix? I assume it is because it looks like someone ground out some extra clearance in casting so it could fit. Anyway reinstalled starter and tractor fired right up. The ring gear teeth look to be in great shape so I dunno. You guys are great. Really appreciate all your help!

Gentlemen, I have a bendix that looks just like this one that is a positive drive. Actually, it is in the open (extended) position now. Any suggestions on how to get it closed. Elec drill won't spin it fast enough.

I did the same thing when I got a new starter drive, went ahead and just had to examine it. Same thing happened. I used a tapered punch and a hammer to wedge the drive back down the shaft. Put punch in on one side and hammered until I could get the pin into the other side of the hole just a bit. Then I hammered the pin in all the way while removing the punch. Secret is the right size punch I guess. Anyway, took about two minutes once I figured out the cure. Hope this helps. Good luck.

it definately is NOT the new and much more desireable "clutch" style starter drive. The flywheel ring teeth that wear are on the tranny side. Maybe a small mirrow and flashlight? Remember, Bendix drives are designed to be operated NO LUBE of anykind. trustme..... ..Dell

449N,
Can't tell you much about your bendix, other than it looks identical to the one on my '41. Sombody hollowed out your mounting opening, which is the best thing that could happen. Believe me, if you've ever tried to mount a starter in the original hole, you'd have ground it out to.

Interesting seat! Probably just enough room for my big fat butt!
