While the timing on this ain't the greatest, I've been offered the chance to buy a 54 NAA from an N buddy of mine who has had bypass surgery and is getting out of restoring old tractors. He bought this one to restore and keep for himself. It has good paint, the hydraulics are fine, the tires are marginal. When the pan was removed, we found there was a loose connecting rod (no knocking prior to pan removal-just took it off to bang out a dent). Doesn't appear to be a lot of damage to crank or bearing. The crank is 1 to 2 1000ths out of round. He thinks it can be reground. He's offered it to me for $2500, and I'm wondering if that's a good deal. Don't know NAA's, just the earlier N's, so am trying to decide. Here in MI, when you can find them, the NAA's run $4500-$5000.
I don't want to end up with more in it than it's worth, so was wondering what you guys thought????

If theres no visible damage to the crankshaft, I'd say that you could replace the bearing and run it. Sounds like normal wear to me. I'd check the rest of the bearings and if none worse, I would wait till the next overhaul before worrying about grinding the crank. Put it back together and check the oil pressure. If it has good pressure, I'd leave it alone. But I would pay attention to the threads of that rod bolt and nut. If they're as snug as some of the rest of them, I'd say someone missed final tightening on it the last time around. That's my thoughts, your gut feelings are the final ones. Go with them.

As far as "getting more in it than it's worth", I've never owned a tractor that I could sell for more than I had in it. Proper restoration is cruel that way. Do not look at it as $$...look at it from the value you will receive in enjoying it, taking pride in it, and doing work with it. If you won't find value in these things, then it is best for the tractor to be owned by someone who will. The 54 NAA is collectible from the standpoint of low production #'s and represents the last year Ford produced a single model. Thus, it is historically significant. Buy it, but only if you can appreciate it.

Do not buy the tractor. Tell me where it is. Chances are if he was going to keep it, he saw it as more than "just another old tractor". ray
