I think I cracked the Block on my 8n

My radiator overheated and I added water. I was doing some trails with a bush hog and my 8n boiled over. I shut it off, went and got some water, turned it back on and added the water. By the time I got back to the pole shed I had smoke all over. I think I cracked the block. I realize now that I should have let it cool down and not added the water so quickly. (stupid) I checked the oil and it looks like water in the oil. Please advise. How much should this cost to fix? Can you fix the block? Should I get a new engine?
I bought the tractor 3 years ago for $3500 and it included plow, disc, and blade. It ran great and was in pretty good condition.

if you are getting water in your oil I would try a compression test and pay close attention to your spark plug color.overheating may have warped your head.It may be ok after it cools down though. Dont run the oil with antifreeze in it though.Good luck

I don't think you have cracked the block. I have been working on Ns for 40 years and have never seen one cracked except on the outside from freezing. You may have blown the head gasket and that may well have been why it was running hot to begin with.

Pull the head and replace the gasket and change the oil. I'll bet this is all it needs.

Rick, step back and take a deep breath. Don't panick (yet). The same thing happened to me. Look for the following; fill the radiator and see if its bubbling up top after it runs up to operating temp. Fill it up high and just let her idle. If you see bubble my guess would be the head gasket went. Its pretty easy to repair and pretty cheap. You said driving bak to the barn you had smoke, did you mean steam? When you have her idling look at the exhaust; is white smoke/steam? These also would lead me to belive head gasket. I am trying to remember if I can recall anybody on the board who has really cracked the block? Just doesn't seem to happen often according to my memory.
just my 2 cents, lot of guys here know a lot more than me
good luck and let us know
tom

By adding cool water to an already very hot 8N engine would cause the head to cool much faster than the hot engine block. If that happens you may warp the head causing the head gasket to leak (water in oil). You might get away with just a head gasket change and having the head checked (decked if needed). My oppinion only, but I doubt you cracked your block... I have my fingers crossed for you! Good luck

How does your luck tend to run? If you have hit the lottery lately it could be that you just overfilled the radiator and the overflow got sucked back onto the hot engine by the fan. Before I tore into it I would put just enough coolant in to cover the core. Change the oil. And run it a little to see what happens.

If your luck runs like mine you busted the cast and depending on where it cracked a twelve hundred dollar bill is out there with your name on it.

Try the first suggestion and let us know what happened.

I seem to remember Dell saying a while back that the N series tractor is "over-radiatored", meaning that the readiator is larger than necessary. WOuldn't the overheating point to a bad water pump or thermostat? Not saying that replacing those would solve the problem for this guy, but for the next guy, what do you think overheating means?

N series Fords definitely are well cooled if the system is anywhere near right. Three gallons of capacity is more than a lot of two hundred horse V8's. My point was that before you pronounce the block cracked look at the simple stuff and make sure you really have a problem. What caused his "overheating" is any body's guess. From the little bit of information available your guess may be better than mine.

Could have just been overfilling the radiator and it pushed what it didn't want. Lots of folks like to throw parts at it like a dealer mechanic. Eventually they get them fixed but they waste a lot of time and money in the process.
