Things to look for when eyeing up a Jublie

I spotted a Jublie. It runs, does not blow smoke and does not seem to be leaking anything I can see. What other things should I be looking for? I am going to insist on a compression test before I buy it.

Thanks in advance.

With regard to your followup question about vane pump. The hydraulic pump lives on the right side of the engine toward the back. Follow the proofmeter cable and it will lead you to it. A vane pump has a square body with rounded corners and a piston pump is round, resembling a starter motor. My 850 still has its vane pump and it still works. I have a piston pump in reserve for when the vane pump decides to go.

Own a Jubilee and it is one of the best purchase I've made in a long time. I'm sure that a lot of people know a lot more than I do about what to look for but I've never seen one with cracked axle housing(keeping my fingers crossed) and I have yet to see one with a vane pump on it. The vane pump has a knob that adjusts hydraulic pressure. I've owned it for about four years and I have done a lot of odds and ends to get it "just right" but it has done the job since day one. BE SURE TO CHECK THE REAR AXLES FOR SLACK. Grab a rear tire and see if you have slack in the axle hub assembly. A bad 12volt conversion will cost you about 100$ to resolve. Leaks on the rear axle hubs can run you upwards of 300$. Hydraulics can get expensive quick. Check the engine oil pressure hot. Leaks can mean gasket sealer or gaskets(cheap) or more serious cash problems and depends on where they are as to how bad. Bet money that the toolbox is rusted out under left floorboard but it hasn't affected the first tractors ability to work. Restoring a tractor would be fun but working with it has been very enjoyable for me..... FWIW

A busted differential housing and poor original repair cost me about $1200 by the time I was done with housing, ring & pinion, bearinge, ETC: (the supports are not visable so calm down safety patrol)

I bought a Jubilee exactly one year ago. It ran, it needed work, and it was a 'good deal'. (I'm not sure for who, exactly, but it was a good deal for someone). So here are the things I HAD to fix, to make it go, and you might want to look at these areas:
1) Wiring. The original '53/'54 wires get pretty sad. It's not really that hard to do, and a complete wire harness cost ~$15. 2) Ignition System: I got sick of dealing with the points and condensor, so I put in Pertonix Ignitor. Cost ~$65, but it works great, and the tractor fires right up, no excessive cranking.
3) All The Fluids: I drained and replaced all the fluids: Engine Oil, Trans. Oil, Differential Oil, Hyd. Oil. Even the 'oil' in the steering box, which was really a brown rusty paste. You can shine a flashlight down into the oil fill ports, and get a fair idea if a lot of water has been living in there. (There's always some).
If the 3 point hitch lifts heavy things, it starts easy when cold, warms up and runs under load when warm, pulls a lod without slipping the clutch, does not blow smoke and has reasonable compression (whatwever that is), how bad can you get hurt? Nothin's too hard to fix on an NAA. What else were you going to do this winter, anyways? Stuff I fixed that didn't absolutlty have to be fixed:
New pistons, rings, wrist pins, valve guides and a few valves, main bearings, oil pump, clutch, 12 volt upgrade, every gasket there is, and (The hardest part): paint. After all that, it still ran about as good as before I fixed all that stuff. I was bored this winter, I guess. I like my NAA, and sometimes, I drive it when I am not intoxicated. You can fix nearly everything but a cracked casting, and even then there's JB Weld. Just don't paint it Blue.

Andy - Pay close attention to the rear axle trumpets abd the rear differential housing. Jubes were notorious for cracked/broken castings in this area. Also check the left running board - It should have a lid that opens up to reveal the toolbox. These rusted out and are very difficult to locate. If it is to be a working tractor this is not as important, as another ford running board can be grafted on. Those castings are critical however-I beleive they are NAA only and are difficult to locate replacements for. Also look at the hydraulic pump. The NAA originally had a vane pump which is a square looking arrangement. They are hard to get parts for and if you need to retrofit a piston pump on it is big $$. Hopefully it already has a piston pump on it. Good luck - the Jubes are great tractors.

Thanks for all of the followup on the weak spots in the Jube. I am not sure what to look for with this Vane hydrolic pump gizmo. Can you or anyone else for that matter post a pic so I can determine wether this little gem is worth my time or not.

Thanks

Andy, I would suggest you put some weight on the 3 point hitch to see if it operates correctly. Check the pto for correct operation. Also consider the condition of the rear tires and wheels; these can be expensive to replace. The Jubilee is a nice little tractor; I hope it's a good one, Bill
