My 2N is starting with 6volts with the normal somewhat slower starting than we are accustom. Should I go ahead and install the 12volt front distributor system with the faster and effecient performience? russ

Russ, I don't think that the 6volt cranking a little slow is a reason to convert, because whatever is causing it will likely be there after the 12 volt conversion. A good rule of thumb is if it ain't broke, don't pretend it is just to work on the tractor.

If you really want to convert to 12 volt, why don't you wait until you solve the slow cranks. Clean and Check the battery terminal connections. Take the battery to the auto parts shop and have it tested. Maybe have a starter shop look at the starter.

Too often the 12 volt conversion is used to treat a problem which it will not be able to solve. Just do an archive search for 12 volt and see how many messages there are from guys having problems with 12 volt systems. Also consider that there is no standard way to convert to 12 volts, but there is a standard way to wire for 6 volts.

Weigh your options and then decide.

You have several options here. One is to fix the problem(s) that is(are) causing your slower starting than you are accustomed to, or you could go with the 12 volt conversion. After a while when the 12 volts does not work as efficient as you like, you could go with 24 volts. (remember, you would also need suitable series resistance to the coil) 24 volts really honks the starter....

I thought after 12 volt you hook a 6 volt and an 8 volt in series to get 14 volts?

Only if you went from 6 to 8 volts when you first started to increase the voltage. Anyway, it is just a 2 volt increase. 2 volt increases are for wusses. Real men double their voltage every time they run into a problem.

Some days I think there ought to be a special board for twelve volt conversion troubles.

Sure, convert. Why not spend a hundred and fifty bucks on a trouble prone system instead of cleaning up the six volt system which has only fifty years of field testing behind it.

You can tune up the six volt system for fifty bucks. New two gauge or better battery cables, generator rebuild kit, replace the wiring harness if in doubt about it, make all connections "clean brite and tight" and it will start just fine. If you have some accessory that needs twelve volts that is a different issue but a quick trip through the archives--or just the last four pages of posts ought to convince you twelve volt conversions are not for the mechanically/electrically challenged.

Your mileage may vary

Thanks for the help. I've decided to let well enough alone, and clean-up what I have.

Thanks Again
