It will start first try when the engine is cold, but after it's been running a while and I shut it off for any reason, it will not start.

Are we talking shuts down when hot or you shut it down and it won't restart? If the former then go after ignition. If the latter take a wire brush to the battery cables--both ends--or if you have other than two gauge or better on a six volt system replace them--cheap [less than ten buckos]. Hot starting is a lot more drain on the starter system than cold and what works cold may not cut it when the whole system is hot.

YOur mileage may vary

You said it was hard to restart but didn't say that it died. I take that to mean when you kill it to get some ice tea ect it won't restart. This tells me you still have spark but it is weak.

Chances are it is a coil but it could be something else. Do a little trouble shooting.

With tractor warm, measure voltage at coil (between balast resistor and coil) it should be battery voltage with points open and about 3V with points closed. If it is greater than about 4V, suspect the coil. If is less than 2.5V, it could be the coil, ballist resistor, or the ignition switch. You can eliminate the switch by jumping it. If you narrow it to coil or resistor, buy both and replace them one at a time.

I just had the same problem with my 8N last week. Replaced the coil and now she is running fine, so spend the thirty bucks and get back to mowing!:)

sounds like a typical problem on this board amnd the most used answer is quite possibly the coil,, when it gets hot it quits i'd bet that s it

1-Check at points with switch on for fire when you open and close points(make sure the lobe is in a position so they are closed and you can open them with an INSULATED HANDLE(don't ask) screwdriver) If you got that 2- take fuel line loose at carb, got good gas flow?
If you got both and it still don't try to start make sure the pond is full enough and pusher in.

What really screws you up is when you check the gas, find you have no flow, find the blockage, correct it and then it still won't start because your coil is bad and you don't know about bad coils. In my case it took me 5 years to figure that out, prior to reading this board. I replaced every piece under $30 on my 9N before I figured out I had a plugged elbow filter in the carb. I love this board. Steve
