I HAVE A 49 8N IN WHICH I,VE INSTALLED NEW POINTS, CONDENSOR, SPARK PLUGS, COIL, CAP, ROTOR AND HAVE SPARK. THE BATTERY AND STARTER HAVE BEEN CHECKED BY A LOCAL SHOP AND ARE OK HOWEVER THE ENGINE TURNS OVER BUT IT APPEARS THAT IT IS TOO SLOW TO FIRE UP. THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET IT STARTED IS TO JUMP START DOWN A HILL BY ENGAGING THE CLUTCH AT A ROLL. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

Those cheap, chinchy, @#$%^&*+ Ford ignition switches cause a lot of ignition system troubles. They get burned and go intermittent. They turn too far and go off of contact. Contacts burn off and roll around inside the switch and do wierd and strange things. They ----- --

So, if you have replaced everything and it still doesn't work. Try an ignition switch. It worked for me - once.

Good luck

A six volt system must have all cables which are specifically designed for 6V.They are of a larger size than those that are readily available in most parts houses. I had one small cable between the starter and switch that caused my problems.

Take off your battery cables, take a small wire brush and clean the dickens out of the points where they attach, then take the cables down to the local parts store and buy the >heaviest< cables they have in the same lengths as the ones you took off. Then it ought to crank over fine. My '48 8N started last winter at 5 deg. with the original six volt system, but I have battery cables thicker than your thumb on it so the current can get from the battery to the starter. If you have teeny 4 gauge cables on it, the current can't get there, and it'll crank >real< slow, even with a new battery.
