I pulled off the carb and the manifold this morning to inspect and replace the gaskets which I hoped would solve the problem of my 2N running only with the choke out. Well...no such luck...although I can get it to idle roughly without the choke (if I'm lucky) while I'm adjusting the idle / main screws. There is plenty of vacuum at the carb inlet so I'm not so sure there is an major air leak, although as I was cleaning/scraping the manifold for the new gasket I did notice a extreme crack all the way across between the front exhaust port and the first intake port. The manifold seems to snug up tightly to the head. Also, while I had it off I cleaned the screen in the carb and cleaned / inspected the carb itself. Everything seems O.K. there but I'm no carb expert. I also checked the fuel line back to the tank and it seems to flow just fine - held the line in "place" but draining into a gas can instead of attached to the carb and I got a steady stream.

What could cause such a sudden change in performance. One day running great - cutting grass & moving dirt - and the next day no power and only running with the choke out. Could it be the manifold crack causing so much grief?? I don't know what else to check, the carb seems to suck plenty of air still???

Anyone with any advice would be appreciated, I need to cut the grass before it's waist high.

Thanks in advance.

Cleaned the carb "thoroughly" and it solved the problem.

I had the darn thing apart two times yesterday and thought I cleaned it pretty good. This morning I blasted the heck out of it with carb cleaner and compressed air and I saw a 'chunk o crud' come out that probably was the trouble.

Thanks all for the responses.

Andy.

The carb sucking air is all well and good, except that it needs to be sucking gas, too. If you have to use the choke, you aren't getting enough gas in the air/fuel mixture. My guess would be that if happened suddenly than you have some trash in the carb somewhere. There's no way to visually inpect it. Best thing to do is a thorough cleaning with carb cleaner followed by compressed air and maybe even cleaning the passages with heavy monofilament line. A small piece of trash lodged in the main jet can cause this problem. If a really good carb cleaning and adjustment doesn't cure it, I'd be looking seriously at the crack in the manifold.

Andy, In my experience both the carb and the manifold can cause the "lack of power" illness.
You can get a manifold (and nutsssss ) and a carb kit easy. Be sure to blow out the carb with compressed air(I use a canned air sometimes, but real compressor is best).
