My restored tractor has serial number 2948 on the engine but it has every other indication of being as late as '46 model. Engine is great, but seems a waste being in a 2N tractor. Any thoughts on this situation?
John

It's quite simple. You need to find an early 9N with a 2N motor. Swap the eingines and you'll have two fine specimens. Now all you need is that 9N and some money and time and permission from the warden.

If you're using the tractor, it's not a waste. If you want a restored early '39 9N then maybe it is a waste. In which case, you need to find an engine-less early 9N (I-beam radius rods, aluminum dash and/or hood, 32" rear wheels, etc) and put yourself together an early 9N. Of course the early sn won't really be "legitimate" since you put it together 62 years after the fact, but only you will know that and whether you divulge that little tidbit to others will be a matter of conscience.

It was a common solution for ford shops to swap a non-working engine for a rebuilt one. Your situation is just a part of the Ford N-series legacy.
