The Tough decision to Part-Out my nice 8N

It's been just killing me, I Have a 48 8N with a 52 engine block yet the distributor is a front mount so it has a early cam in it put in when it was rebuilt 5 years ago the engine is strong no oil use, 48 lbs oil pressure at full throttle when HOT, starts right up.

But its not perfect either, the hydraulic position control needs work and I feel it could use a new cylinder
and piston, and the front axel could use new bushings and the steering sector is a bit loose but works fine running around in the field brush hogging and snow plowing in the winter, 80% tires on new rims with 12.4 rears and 600 16 fronts, nice paint (but its Blue & tan) :( Overall its a good tractor that does everything you expect out of an 8N

The problem is I drive it about 16 miles each way to do work at another old farm I maintain, taking a 16 foot trailer loaded with my hog, back blade, boom. chains, rake ect..... I do this 4 to 5 times a year or I should
do it 5 times a year its hard to drive it both ways just to hog 6 or so acres and rake out the gopher mounds
and take care of all the misc. tasks I need it for and its hard on gas because to get any speed I need it at full throttle the whole way. then to when leave it there, I need it here!

The solution: a sherman high low aux tranny!!! ahh 800.00 and I'M crusing at better than 20 on less than full throttle! Plus lower gears too! I can do this, but wait.... that loose old style steering sector which is fine at
15mph is now too loose for 20-25 MPH. I'll need a late model sector..... 400.00 up to 1200.00 now and I still will need other late model parts as well to make it work. like a late model dash and sector arms ect..... ..... .

Well the long and short of it is, I found another tractor, a 51 8N with a sherman installed in a tight tranny
but with a worn out engine, some missing sheemetal, bad tires. The cost to rehab the 51 as a stand alone
tractor is just too pricey to make it viable. BUT if I swap all the parts I need to get the 51 up to snuff from the 48.....
I'm good to go and I'll make back some money from the excess parts, Transmission, Ring gears, axels
the 51 engine block well... a whole tractors worth of parts.

Having script fenders is not critical to my needs. Having all the good of a 51 with a sherman, dual rear seals, late sector, side mount dist. Is critical to my needs.

The tough part is I need to kill my good friend the 48 to do it.
And that makes me just sick inside.

NO WAY!!! Don't distroy your good tractor. If you
can do all this swapping around you can rebuild the '51 and keep the '48 too. There are plenty of
parts available to make the necessary repairs, and
you won't need the hi-lo tranny, because you can keep a tractor at both places, so sell or trade
it for some of the new parts. You will enjoy this
project and you will be glad you did.

I tend to agree with David.
I guess I am unsure why you would kill a good tractor that has potential instead of rebuilding the 51 engine and having 2 tractors to play...uh...work with.

I just don't get it, but that is just me.
Do what you feel you need to do, but I will be raising a bottle of sour-mash to my lips in rememberance of a faithful 48 that will be no more...

I understand your concerns as well as your feelings reguarding the 48, as I have them too.

Couple of problems with the 2 tractor theory.

The 48 NEEDS 500-800.00 worth of parts to make it tight.

The 51 needs a total engine rebuild 1200.00
fenders 200-300, grill 100-200 tires and rims 800+
paint 200 elect+battery 200 misc. 300
so 3000.00 to get the 51 nice+ purchase price

so 0ver 4000.00 later I now have 2 tractors and only 1 brush hog 1 back blade 1 rake 1 boom 1 plow 1 disc 1 trailer *16 miles apart.*

Rich, Just to complicate things more, How about making the '48 tight AND then buy a used tandom axle 16 ft trailer for $500 to $600 to haul the tractor with its daily implement to the other farm and back. Maybe the trailer you use to haul multiple implements will work!

Well, I admire your concern and pride in your tractors. I would go ahead and do the swap-out.
What you perceive as a problem or a "killing of your old friend 48" is really just a rekindling and a mild "upgrade" - The most important parts such as the life blood of the tracotr - the engine etc will transfer - so the heart and soul of your 48 will stay with you. I would really try to relocate as many of the 48 parts as feasible in order to appease your fears about the procedure.

I think we forget that from dust we came. Better original 8N parts will make a better tractor and you will never lose your 48 friend.

Good luck with your decision.

Andy

Sounds like you have the answer your-self just need the board to give you that extra umphhhh. Go for it and have FUN FUN FUN!! And you can always sale the extra parts and probably get more than you paid for the other tractor.

Well... 1st things 1st, the 51 arrives this weekend, a though assessment will be required
to determine the parts I need and don't need.

I will start by going though the back end of the 51 and rehabing it so my 48 can still keep working. I intend to do some horse trading with Don B for rebuild parts to keep the project moving forward without killing the 48 prematurely

Some parts like the starter, carb, govenor I will keep regardless just to have spares, the heavy items like tranny, engine block ect.. I will try to sell up at the local threshing show this august.

I will post in the parts for sale section of this website all unsold misc parts as well as if any one wants to email me with a specific request I will try to accomodate them when I know more.
