Help Folks,

I'm having some generator/electrical problems with my 8N. Yesterday, the pully on the generator froze up, so I took the unit off and got a rebuilt one from the Ford man. I hooked it up the same as the old generator - black wire to generator's upper terminal and white wire to lower terminal. The third wire (also white but longer) goes to a terminal on the back of the generator.

I started the tractor and the fan and everything else seems to go around and around just fine, but the ammeter rests at zero - showing no charge or discharge. Ammeter did this with the old generator too.

I used the 8N to cut brush (hog) for about an hour and then shut the thing off. When I tried to restart it a few minutes later, the battery was dead.

I'm an idiot at this stuff, so I hope some of you more experienced N'ers can give me a hint. Do you think it's the voltage reg. or do I have the generator leads wired up wrong or what?

An old 8N tractor is quite a challege for a city guy like me to keep running. But, it reminds me of a creaky old dog I once had. Pepper couldn't even bark standing up in his last year, but I just kept taking care of him until he finally died in his sleep. Wife won't let me have another dog, so I bought this 8N last month. Now she thinks she should have let me buy the dog.

Thanks for any advice you have to offer.

Bob

You did not mention, anything about polarizing the new generator. Try that first. If that does not work, try the troubleshooting procedure below.
