Was mowing with my 5' Bushhog behind my 850 yesterday, moving along at about 1700 rpm in 4th gear when this beautiful Indigo came out of the uncut weeds and headed into the 'cut area'. I thought he was clear and away from me but he turned and headed right for the tractor. I locked up both wheels and the tractor stopped 'rat now'. I would have killed one fine snake specimen if it were not for the OR coupler and good brakes. For those of you unfamiliar with the Indigo it is a large, up to 8', black snake. They are a very beneficial and desirable snake. I guess this one was 5 1/2' - 6'long. ray

Way to go Ray,out here we don't have any big or poisonous snakes, just garter snakes and a few rainbow water snakes. I usually try and miss them if I see them.I like chopping them field rats up though, to feed the birds.

Yes, the ole' indigo snake. The largest nonpoisonous snake in the US. It is a threatened species and its small population is getting reduced each year. Ray, wise move on avoiding that nice big ole snake. You knowledge and attentiveness coupled with the ORC (no pun intended haha) saved this important animal.

Here is a pic to enjoy.

My snake book shows the Indigo is found in the deep south, mainly Florida and Georgia and west to Texas. They are a shiny, midnight-blue. ray

If you would have noticed there was a :) char at the end of the message and the message was in jest. As a kid I had a very large collection of Snakes and other Reptiles including a Red Mountain Rattler, a Sidewinder and a Diamond Back. I still like and admire them today.
