I read the posts on the 5 foot vs 4 foot bush hog and still have some questions. I just got my 9N and have a bunch of Sumacs to get rid of. What kind of mower do I want? I have heard that there was a rotary mower that if you could drive over it, it would grind up the brush. I know that the 9N is not a large tractor but am wondering what size brush I should be able to get rid of.

Your comments are appreciated!

I have a 4 footer, and yes, you can go through some thick stuff....but basically, If it's over an inch in diameter, I cut it first. Sumacs can be tough. I'll use long handled pruners for stuff between 1-2", and the chain saw for the rest. The reason I cut it first is for safety.

First off...it's dangerous when big chunks of wood are flying out of your mower....VERY DANGEROUS! Also, it beats up the driveline.

Second, is the fact that if the brush is that high, you run the risk of getting pulled off the tractor by the brush. This probably wouldn't be on my short list of good ways to die...! If the brush hog can lop off limbs from trees, I'm sure it wouldn't have much trouble with your arms, legs or head.

If that sounds scary, I meant it. I read in the paper all the time about knuckleheads who didn't use common sense for a split second, and it cost them and their loved ones dearly.

My advice is....trim the Sumacs to a reasonable height...brushhog em the rest of the way, and then keep em short by brush hoggin once a month. In a few years they'll give up.

Good Luck
Steve

That's good advice. I was mowing last weekend and a piece of wood flew out and smacked me on the ankle. OUCH! Don't forget to wear boots, gloves and safety glasses.

I had the same problem and I did something about it. I welded sections of angle to the top front edge of the (5ft) brushhog and drilled holes in it so i could attach 1 continous piece of belting across the front of the hog. Now my ankles feel much better and it bends when the pto shaft hits it (I left slack in the center and lets it move more.) and the belt is wide enough that it is reversible for more use. Oh yeah, I did not put any angle in the center as it would interfere with the pto shaft more than the belt.....Tom
