Hello again,

I'm still trying to figure out the corrct way to polarize my new (rebuilt) generator. Several of you were kind enough to respond to my earlier post. I've also read all the archives and talked to my Ford dealer. I seem to be getting conflicting advice. For example, Claus, in your Sept. 4, 1999 post you say to connect jumper from the Bat terminal to the Gen/Arm terminal. Then, in your Nov. 29, 1999 post you say to properly polarize the generator you would hook the jumper from the bat terminal of the VR to the field terminal of the regulator for a couple of seconds.

As I examine the voltage regulator, I see four terminals. Two of them are at the top of the regulator. One is on the lower right side, and one is on the bottom. (see wiring diagram on page 19 of the FO-4 manual. Which of these four do I need to use?

As I examine the generator, I see three terminals. Two of them are on the side of the generator and one is on the rear end of the generator (see page 19 of FO-4 manual again). Which of these three terminal do I need to use?

Sorry I'm so dense on this stuff. I don't mean to be a bother.

Any opinions on this would be appreciated.

Bob

I have never stated that on an 8N, you should connect the bat terminal to the field terminal. As a matter of fact, I allways caution not to do this, since one can damage the VR by doing this. The correct way to polarize the generator, is to connect a jumper wire from the bat terminal of the voltage regulator to the arm/gen terminal of the VR. The purpose is to apply the proper polarity voltage to the high side of the field winding. Since in the N generators, the high side of the field is connected internally to the armature terminal, the only way to do it is to connect to the armature terminal. Since the armature terminal of the generator connects to the armature termial of the voltage regulator, you accomplish your goal by connecting a wire from the bat termial of the vr to the arm terminal. I hope this clears up any confusion.

I can see where the explanation can get a little confusing. I have stated on occasion, that the purpose of polarization is to have a current of the proper polarity energize the field winding of the generator for a couple of seconds. This imparts a residual magnetic field to the pole shoes. However, internal to the generator, the high side of the field winding is connected to the amrmature terminal. So access to the high side of the field is through the armature termainal. The low side of the field winding is brought out of the generator through a screw on the top of the generator and connects to the field termial on the generator. Never apply voltage to this termainal. To make matters more confusing, there are generators that have the low side of the field internally grounded and the high side is brought out of the case through a terminal. In this kind of generator, one would polarize by applying voltage of the proper polarity to the field terminal. THIS CONFIGURATION IS NOT USED ON THE FORD N TRACTORS.

I don't know how to polorize your system but from the FO-4 manual I determined the following about your regulator:
The bottom terminal is a ground
The right side terminal is Battery power
The top terminals are field and armature (left to right)

We will have to wait for Claus to clear up his contrary postings.

Hope this helps.
