Can anyone tell me how the proof meter is suppose
to work? My meter has a statement stating: Hours
at 1580 RPM. It this to mean that to register any
hours, the engine has to be at 1580 rpm or higher?

I would appreciate a response.

Thanks in advance,
Paul Kovar

The proof meter turns all the time.. If the motor was run continously at 1580 rpm for say 3000 actual hrs the meter would read 3000hrs....but if it idled at 526 rpm for the same 3000 hrs the meter would read 1000hrs..the meter counts revolutions not actual time but if the tractor is operated at or near the 1580 rpm it will be close...The hourmeters on modern equipment are mostly electric and record actual time that the key is on. If you want an accurate meter try a forklift place they can get hour meters in either 6 or 12 volt but if you got a six volt positive ground be shure to hook the positive lead to the frame and the negative lead to ignition switch.....Big Mike

No. It means that the proofmeter will register 1 hour in 1 hour's time at 1580 rpm. It will register more hours at higher rpm and less hours at lower rpms. At 790 rpm the proofmeter will only register a half hour in one hour's time. You would need an electric hourmeter tied to the ignition circuit to record the actual hours the tractor has been running. Since the 8N was designed to be worked at about 1580 rpm, I guess they decided to have the proofmeter hours be accurate at that rpm.
